Debogorii-Mokrievich, Vladimir
Bunt V Goranakh [the Revolt in Gorany]
London: Zhizni, 1902. Softcover. First edition; 4 3/4 x 7; pp. 76; grey wraps printed in black; several white spots to wraps and title page; minor foxing to edges; publisher's list taped to title page verso; a few pages with handwritten page numbers; overall very good. Vladimir Debogorii-Mokrievich (1848 - 1926) was a Russian revolutionary, populist, author, and member of the nobility. In 1873, he went to Switzerland where he became closely associated with Bakunin and his followers. After returning to Kiev, he organized a "circle of rebels" and took an integral part in the so called Chigirinskii Conspiracy in 1877 where populists unsuccessfully attempted to raise a peasant revolt using a forged "Tsar's Manifesto" in which Alexander II allegedly admitted his powerlessness to help farmers and asked them to unite in a secret society against nobles and officials. In 1878 he organized the prison break of several fellow narodniks. Mokrievich was arrested in February 1879 and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in Siberia of which he escaped in November of the same year and went to Switzerland, where he edited and published several emigre journals, and later to Bulgaria where he lived until his death. The current book, No. 14 in Biblioteka "Zhizni" ("Life" Library) series, described the events in the village of Gorany (in the Ukraine) after the abolition of serfdom. Zhizni began its life as a journal, published first in St Petersburg (1897-1901), then London and Geneva (1902). It's editorial policy was largely under the control of Legal Marxists Peter Struve and Mikhail Baranovsky though the magazine also published works of Revolutionary Marxists including Anton Chekhov, Lenin, Gorky, others. Several copies in institutions with none other currently in the trade. Ill.: 0. 2.
