Fredrik Hendrik van Oranje, Prins van Oranje, Graaf van Nassau, Signed letter to the 'Staten van Utrecht' in which a request is made for a financial contribution of 'tien hondert dusent guldens' (1 million Dfl.) to be spent on expanding the fleet (consisting of 30 war ships) with 5 war-ships and 5 frigates.The expansion was deemed necessary in order to maintain the naval superiority held at that time, 'dat wij tot noch toe meester van der zee sijn geweest, de vijandt sich daervan meester soude maecken.'.
1627. Dated 16 [??] Februarii, 1627. Folio manuscript. [Meas. appr. 19.5 x 31 cm.]. 3 further folds into 9.5 x 9 cm letter size. 55 lines of text and 1 signature. (3, I (blank), I (address side) pp.). Secretarial Letter signed. Autograph signature Henry de Nassau. (Remains of red lacquer seal on address side.). (On paper watermarked w. coat of arms, 4 quarters, of which 2 with lions, 2 with banners. Initials 'CB', see Heawood, item 604, plate 93, for the year 1627). Frederik Hendrik van Oranje Nassau [1584 -1647], son of Willem I van Oranje and his 4th wife Louise de Coligny. Married to Amalia van Solms. Half brother of Stadhouder Maurits van Nassau, whom he succeeded as Stadhouder van Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel and 'kapitein- admiraal - generaal van de Unie' in 1625. Nicknamed the 'Stedendwinger' because of his many succesfull sieges against such cities as Den Bosch, Venlo, Roermond, Maastricht, Rijnberk, Breda etc.
