FITZGERALD, F. Scott
The Vegetable or from President to Postman
New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. First Edition. Hardcover. Fitzgerald's last book published before his masterpiece THE GREAT GATSBY which had a print run of 20,870 copies while this book had only 7,650 published. As with the better known GATSBY, this title, Fitzgerald's only published full-length play, also explores the American Dream but here with more comic intent and more pathetic results. The main character, Jerry Frost, strives to be President of the United States, if he is unable to make it as a postman. The quotation Fitzgerald places on the center of the title page sums it up: "Any man who doesn't want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn't got as much to him as a good dog has -- he's nothing more or less than a vegetable." Bruccoli A 10.I.a. Slight foxing to the endpapers. Fine and bright in a Very Good, unrestored example of the uncommon dustwrapper that has a light stain at the bottom portion of the spine and an inch-deep chip at the top of the front cover obliterating most of the "T" in the word "The .

(Fitzgerald, F. Scott).
["the World's Fair" by F. Scott Fitgerald]. Early Material Which He Later Adapted Into "Tender Is the Night" As First Published in the Kenyon Review Vol. X, No. 4, Autumn 1948.
Gambier, OH: Kenyon College, 1948. 1948. - Octavo, 9 inches high by 6 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed brown & white wraps, titled in white and gray on the front cover and in brown on the spine. The corners of the soiled covers are creased. [192] pages in all consisting of [5] leaves, and pages [539]-720. The bottom and top corners of the first few pages are bumped. Good.

Includes "The World's Fair" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, here published on pages 567 through 578, with commentary by Arthur Mizener titled "A Note on 'The World's Fair'", on pages 701 through 704.

"Composed shortly after The Great Gatsby came out, F. SCOTT FITZGERALD's story 'The World's Fair' was an early treatment of material he would eventually transform into Tender is the Night (1934); the character of Francis Melarkey became the novel's Rosemary Hoyt, and Seth and Dinah Piper were early versions of Dick and Nicole Diver, The story ran posthumously in the Kenyon Review in 1948, the same year that Malcolm Cowley brought out a revised and radically reordered version of Tender is the Night based on notes that Fitzgerald had completed before he died. Cowley included 'The World's Fair' under a different title as an appendix to his edition of the novel. Literary critic, ARTHUR MIZENER (1907-1988) was Mellon Foundation Professor of English at Cornell University from 1951 to 1975. In addition to other works, he authored the first biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Far Side of Paradise (1951) along with a biography of Ford Madox Ford, The Saddest Story: A Biography of Ford Madox Ford (1971)." - [Quoted from bibliographic information available from "The Kenyon Review"]. Good .
