With the author's ink inscription to the half title, 'Monsieur Dosquet, avec tous les remerciments et les compliments de l'auteur&apos. About was a French novelist, publicist, and journalist who is best known for his satirical novel Le Rois des Montagnes, but also wrote a commentary on modern Greece, pamphlets on contemporary issues, and popular manuals of political economy. The present volume tells the tale of Master Pierre, who gives up shepherding to become a solitary hunter until he meets a small girl and attempts to nurse her back to health. Bound in a full red leather binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little soiling to the front board. A little rubbed to the head and tail of the spine, and front joint. The front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from some very light spotting to the front and rear of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

With frontispiece and 52 plates in two states, and numerous vignettes in the text, all drawn by Piguet and engraved on wood by Huyot. Number 6 of 100 copies for subscribers on china paper, out of an edition of 115. This one was for Monsieur Henri Beraldi, well-known bibliophile, publisher, president of the Societe des Amis des Livres. and author of books on French printmakers of the 19th century, with his name printed under the number. Six stories by a witty commentator on the mores of his time. (Carteret 1946: IV, p.41.) Dark blue crushed morocco with gilt lettering and five raised bands to spine. Dentelles intricately gilt, with the label "Stikeman & Co." Marbled end papers; original printed wrappers bound-in. T.e.g. Lovely condition, but for slight wear to the surface of the lower board, and barely visible split to paper of inner front hinge. .

He made his name as an entertaining anti-clerical writer. The satirical Le Roi des Montagnes (1856; translated into English by Mary Louise Booth as The King of the Mountains, and by Tom Taylor as The Brigand and His Banker, for a dramatised version) is the best-known of his novels. About Edmond is also a comic writer as he knows how satire. He became famous with his new style to the quick, clear and concise, and his novels that evoke imaginary situations, often inspired by the progress of science. Weddings of Paris (1856), The King of the Mountains (1857), The Man with the Broken Ear (1862) or The Province Marriages (1868) are all bestsellers. In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards.
