'Monkfish Moon' was Gunesekera's first work and was shortlisted for several notable rizes, and was named a 'New York Times Notable Book' in for 1993. Encouraged by the reception to this text, Gunesekera went on to write his novel Reef, that led to him becoming a finalist for the Man Booker Prize in 1994.
