Title: Ephemera Relating to the Incarceration of Willard Uphaus in New Hampshire in 1960
Description: No Place, No Publisher, 1960. Unbound. Ephemera relating to the incarceration of Willard Uphaus in New Hampshire in 1960. Four pieces: a tri-folding brochure style letter to the people of New Hampshire from Uphaus; two presumably mechanically reproduced typed letters, one single sided, one double sided, on the Uphaus case and actions that could be taken on his behalf; a small sheet announcing support for Uphaus from an Arthur Harvey of Raymond, NH. The brochure letter from Uphaus provides his supporters with his version of events surrounding his jailing, alluding to the World Fellowship of which he was a member and asserting the importance of not informing on others. The double sided newsletter, date October 1960, discusses the background of the Uphaus case, as well as referring to other impending cases, groups which are active on Uphaus' and other behalf, etc. The third letter is titled 'Homage to Uphaus Week, Oct. 17-23' and solicits actions on his behalf, including going door to door, writing notes, etc. With a guide to expected arguments and possible counter-arguments. This was also written by Arthur Harvey. Willard Uphaus was a pacifist preacher who was jailed for one year in New Hampshire for refusing to reveal guests at the World Fellowship of Faiths in Conway, New Hampshire. Investigated by the NH attorney general, Uphaus cooperated with him relating to his activities, but would not turn over the names of others at the group. This investigation was part of a larger action investigating communist activities. The Supreme Court of the United States upheld his conviction and he spent a year in jail, with this generating many protest marches and demonstrations (see New York Times obituary for previous information). All pieces in GOOD or slightly better condition. Minor soiling, some fold creases, wrinkling and edgewear present. Some chipping and tearing along the extremities, with minor loss. Paper clip rust stain to the brochure and small sheet, with staining along the left edge of the brochure. Previous bookseller's price note on the brochure. Good .
