Allott, Andrew
The Marches (New Naturalist 118)
Collins, London, 2011. First Edition, Hardcover. Fine Condition/Fine. 9780007248162 A complete natural history and the first large-scale survey of this unique part of the country. The borderland between England and Wales has long been a region of contention. Its distinctive geography, wedged roughly between Welsh mountains and English river beds has not only isolated this rural, sparsely-populated slice of land, but created a unique identity. Stretching along the bordering counties with England - Cheshire, Shropshire and Herefordshire - the Welsh Marches are made up of a mixture of mountains and moorlands, farms and wooded river valleys. The natural history of the region is like most parts of the British Isles - inextricably linked to the activities of man across many thousands of years. Andrew Allott brings together a wealth of material in the latest New Naturalist volume, much of which is published here for the first time. Presenting the first large-scale survey of this unique part of the country, he offers a complete natural history of the area, covering the hills, fossils, ice ages, meres, mosses, forests, streams and rivers, whilst also focusing on man's impact on the region, the changing wildlife, the impact of agriculture and the consequences of past and present industrial action. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. x + 452. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. green cloth. 'All Things is Well Here' Letters From Hugh James of Levens to James Grahme, 1692-95 (CWAAS Record Series Vol. X)
Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, Cumbria, 1988. First Edition, Softcover. Fine Condition. 9780950077987 Inscribed by Author. inscription on pre-title page reads "from the author New Year 1988"; Colonel James Grahme, one-time Privy Purse to James II and Master of the King's Buckhounds, man about Court, friend of the Monarch and also of the Monarch's mistress, found life difficult on the accession of William and Mary. Suddenly he became a suspected traitor, Catholic, and plotter. That he was none of these things, or only in a very small way, did nothing to make his circumstances more comfortable. He bought Levens from his cousin Alan Bellingham in 1689, and prepared to make this house in Westmorland fit for a civilised man to inhabit with his wife and family. Grahme spent much of his time away from Levens so corresponded with the men left to further his interests & direct his works. Hundreds of these letters survive & those printed here, from his steward Hugh James, are of especial interest for their vividness & quality of information. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 205 pages. In the past its impenetrable forests, lonely marshlands and isolated villages were ideally suited to the flourishing of singularity and bred all sorts of odd characters. The people of Essex, always noted for their love of individualism, were proud of these characters and regarded even the most ridiculous with good-humoured tolerance. They appreciated the originality of their views and admired the spirited way in which they pursued their fantasies and flouted the conventions.
