[ROBERT MERRY and CHARLES BONNER]
Airs, Duetts, and Chorusses, Arrangement and Scenery, and Sketch of the Pantomime, Entitled The Picture of Paris. Taken in the Year 1790. As performed at the Theatre-Royal, Covent Garden.
T.C. Cadell, 1790. 8vo. pp. 20 [with half title]. Later parchment backed boards. Robert Merry [1755 - 98] was a poet and dilettante who managed to squander a considerable fortune. He was much taken with the French Revolution and spent time in Paris during 1789 and 90, following which he presumably wrote this short pantomime with the actor/manager Charles Bonner.

E. H.
Album of Watercolours and Pencil Drawings.
1834 - 1840. Large 4to. 280 x 230 mm. Sheep backed pressed cloth covers. An album of 34 images, alternating fine pencil drawings with lovely vibrant watercolours, all on thin card except for one page of a pair of pith pictures mounted on the card which are slightly damaged. One lift the flap picture showing the artist's easel with sketchbook which opens out to show a landscape view. E.H. is unknown, the front of the album is dated 1834 and the rear 1840, presumably the start and finish dates. The pencil drawings show a talented use of shading to give true depth to the images, though the portraiture may be less skilled. The natural history watercolours and drawings are of a high quality and the anthropomorphic figure, "The Circulating Library" show the artist's witty side.

C.H.
Album of Watercolours and Drawings.
1834 - 40. 4to. 275 x 230 mm. Sheep backed blind stamped calf. 15 watercolours, 17 pencil drawings plus a "transformation" watercolour. Initial C.H. to end paper. An interesting and most attractive collection of original drawings and watercolours, all apparently executed in the same hand on a variety of subjects. The 15 watercolours are generally natural history studies: fruit, flowers, butterflies. The pencil drawings more varied: topographical, nature studies, portraits, etc. including a couple of studies of Napoleon and one of Isaac van Amburgh and his animals. Van Amburgh was a popular showman who travelled with his circus, considered to be the first animal trainer of modern times and who would enter the cages of wild beasts without harm. Plus an attractive transformation watercolour, "the circulating library", a figure made up of books, and a 'lift the flap' of an artist's easel and sketch book, perhaps representing the artist's work.

[ANSON, George]
Anson's Voyage Round the World, Chart with 6 engraved views: a chart of the Pacific Ocean from the Equinoctial to the Latitude of 39½.
Printed for J. Hinton at the King's Arms in St Paul's Church Yard, 1748. Copper engraving on a single sheet, 525 x 200 mm. The six engraved views are: Part of the Northeast Side of Terra del Fuego at the entrance to the Straits le Maire, Burning of the Town of Payta on the coast of Santa Fee in the South Sea, Chinese Vessels, a View of Cape Espiritu Santu on Samal..., Watering Place at Tenian, Compilation view. The final compilation view "A View of the Commodore's Tent and the Island of Juan Fernandes" has been modified with the addition of two sea lions in the foreground> Anson is depicted with his back to the viewer, looking towards his tents, and flanked by a male and female sea lion rather incongruously reclining in the wooded landscape. This map was issued in the Universal Magazine in 1748 reflecting the contemporary interest in Anson's voyage. The maps in the Universal Magazine are among the "...best executed and most attractive of magazine maps...many (with) decorative cartouches." David Jolly. Maps in British Periodicals, Part I. Blookline, MA, 1990. p. 188.

[EDWARD OXFORD]
Attempt to Assassinate the Queen and Prince Albert.
Printed by J. Wilson, [1840] Broadside, 270 x 210 mm. laid down on card. An unrecorded street broadside. The first of eight attempts on the Queen's life. Oxford was charged with treason but found not guilty by reason of insanity. After a spell in Bethlem and then Broadmoor, he was transported to Australia in 1868 where, under an assumed name John Freeman, he married a widow and became a churchwarden. He wrote articles under the name Liber for the Melbourne Argus on the city's slums, markets and racetracks which were published as Lights and Shadows of Melbourne Life [1888]. He died in 1900. The identification of John Freeman as Edward Oxford was only made in 1987 in an article by F.B. Smith, Lights and Shadows in the Life of John Freeman, published in Victorian Studies.
