1527. JUVENALIS, Decimus Iunius
Iuvenal tradotto di latino in volgar lingua per Georgio Summa Ripa veronese, novamente impresso.
Toscolano, Alessandro Paganini, (between 1527 and 1533). 15 x 9.5 cm. 18th century boards. Signatures a-q8. (128) p. including two blanks at the end. Title on the recto of the first leaf, subtitle on verso. Colophon in a double frame on verso of the last text page. Translation of the sixteen Satires of Juvenal into Italian by Giorgio Sommariva. The text is mainly printed in a cursive type, with the addition of several printed pointing hands. Guide letters in capital spaces. 2nd edition: this translation was first published in 1480 (Treviso). Spine worn blank, sides of the decorated paper also worn. Inside the book are some stains and humidity lines. A few notes in pencil and in ink, and some scribbling on leaf q i. Faithful translation into Italian by Giorgio Sommariva (1435-1497), a lawyer and member of the City Council of Verona. With an introduction by Summa Ripa / Sommariva in verse, where he sums up the themes in the sixteen Satires. In the three poems where homosexual love and sex is alluded to, it is consequently called sodomy, or the sodomitical sin, that to judge from these poems was considered well-known in his days. Juvenal's coarse similes are faithfully translated (citation from Satire II): 'Taedia non lambit Cluviam, nec Flora Catullam. Hispo [sometimes rendered Hippo] subit juvenes, et morbo pallet utroque.' In Italian: 'Flora Catulla gia non va lambendo/ Ne Thedia Cluvia. Ma Hispo ben patiente/ Per l'un e l'altro mal va ben pallendo.' Morbo utroque / l'un et l'altro mal = 'fellandi et paedicandi, dum agit et patitur', says Lubinus, one of the scientists quoted in the Schrevelius edition of Juvenal: oral and anal sex, both active and passive. Dryden would translate this in 1692: 'Flavia may now and then turn up for Bread, But chastly with Catulla lies a Bed. Your Hispo acts both Sexes parts, before A Fornicator; and behind, a Whore' Nothing about an incoming pallor, but the essence is clear.

(SANDBERG). BADÍI, Líbero, Two handwritten letters signed, adressed to Willem Sandberg. (1964).
(SANDBERG). BADÍI, Líbero
Two handwritten letters signed, adressed to Willem Sandberg. (1964).
Written in Italian on very thin paper with ink, on both sides. About 31 x 22 cm each. Both dated Olivos (near Buenos Aires) 1964: July 19 (46 lines) and September 17 (26 lines). Both letters with an illustration, depicting a sculpture. Paper worn at the sides and with little tears and gaps. Sculptor Líbero Badíi (1916-2001) was born in Arezzo, Italy, but moved to Argentine in 1927. These letters mention fellow sculptors Sigwart Blum and Antoine Pe[v]sner, and difficulties about transporting work to exposition places in Minneapolis and Venice. A (translated) citation of the end of the earlier letter: 'Following my destiny of work, what with economic difficulties and a large family, until death I will follow my artist thoughts. The point is that Buenos Aires has a very easy climate for the latest fashion, 'Pop Art' has taken strength. I believe that we have arrived at the moment to put an end to an easy creation. Creating is long and hard and not everyone understands the absolute. Dear Sandberg, forgive this letter that comes to bother you in your fruitful work. Sometimes I have to concentrate my thoughts on people who are sincere in their fruitful work.'

Profetia veridica.
Venice, Stamperia Pinelli, 1675 (&) 1670. Simple later cover. 46, (10) p. In the middle eight pages of blank paper are sewn in with notes from the years after 1730 and from ca. 1901. Some wear and stains. On the title page the signature of a former owner, H. Labouchère, and the inscription 'Brussele, li 2. Gennaio 1901'. The book is richly annotated in the same hand as the Italian inscription from 1901. "Veridic prophecy of all the supreme pontiffs until the end of the world made by San Malachy, Archbishop Armacano. (&) Notable observation on the election of the New Pontiff Clement X. And on the Verification of the Prophetia of San Malachy 'De Flumine Magno'." Famous mystification. Predictions attributed to the Irish twelfth century saint St. Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. This is a list of 112 popes with cryptic descriptions, which first came to light in 1587. The list was seen as falsification early on, because the descriptions up to 1590 (Sixtus V) are quite correct, but those after that are generally not. This 'prophecy' was probably intended as an original attempt to get a certain cardinal, Girolamo Simoncelli, to the papal throne. But this 'fake old news' was not successful, another one was chosen. Nevertheless, the prophecy has been revived countless times with each election of popes, especially in modern times, because the current pope would be the last according to this list! The second publication in this 17th-century edition is an attempt to link Pope Clement X to the description 'De Flumine Magno'. The author tries to make it plausible that this expression refers to the river Tiber. Labouchère is a noble family that had international branches (British, Dutch) with important functions in banking and diplomacy, and the pastimes that grow from a financially well-watered soil like that. But which "H. Labouchère"?
