Chicago, Chicago Hebrew Mission, 1915. Geniet. 96 p. 1e druk. Plakzegel op de rug. Hoekjes wat versleten. Inscriptie aan John Rottenberg van 'his friend + sister/ J.C. Rounds/ Chicago/ Jan 1916'. Verzameling toespraken van verschillende predikanten, o.a. Harris H. Gregg, B.B. Sutcliffe, Henry Beets, C. Kuyper, Geo. L. Robinson, F.E. Howitt, en voorts E.S. Greenbaum en Max Reich. Onder andere een toespraak van dominee Henry Beets (1869-1947), geen familie van Nicolaas Beets, hoewel hij wel met hem gecorrespondeerd heeft. Beets groeide als Hein Beets op in het Nederlandse Koedijk en emigreerde naar Michigan in 1886. Dit is een door Beets zelf geschreven verhaal over wat Nederland en de protestantse Kerk aan het jodendom te danken had. Johannes Rottenberg (1890-1942) was de enige zoon van de rabbijn van Krakau; hij was protestant geworden en vervolgens missiepredikant, hij trachtte de joden in Nederland tot het protestantse geloof te bekeren. Voor de nazi's maakte dat natuurlijk weinig uit: hij stierf in Buchenwald. In 1945 verscheen een biografie, Gezonden en teruggeroepen, door A.R. Zalman-Marda, nu op DBNL.

'Chicago, Ill. - Henry Hull - who has the principal role in "Tobacco Road", which was closed by Mayor Edw. J. Kelly, of Chicago, who termed it obscene and sordid, is pictured with the author, Erskine Caldwell. It is expected that a legal battle will be waged to defend the play.' A strange picture: on stage, a cheerful grinning Hull, with the outfit of a dirty farmer, scoops water from a wooden bucket and hands it to Caldwell who is well-dressed, smoking a cigarette, and broadly smiling to the camera.

Dat zie je niet vaak: een publicatie uit het in 1847 door Nederlanders gestichte plaatsje in Michigan, het blad van Hope College, een Preparatory School annex School of Music, en het Western Theological Seminary maakte er ook deel van uit. Met veel advertenties vol Nederlandse namen: Boter, Barkema, Lokker, Rutgers, Huizenga en De Vries. En dan heb je nog redacteurs als Pasma, Pikaart, Schwitters, Vis, Stronks en Heemstra. Met een artikel van Henry V.E. Stegeman en een verslag van een aantal succesvolle sportwedstrijden (met afbeelding van het winnende team, waarin we namen zien als Stegeman, Warnshuis, Abbink en Vruwink). De verschijning van het boek Tawl van Philip Dröge was aanleiding om deze publicatie op te nemen, maar helaas wordt er geen Nederlands woord in gebruikt.

Amsterdam, Jacq. van Cleef, 1905. Ingenaaid. (8), 248 p. Geïllustreerd (door Fanny Y. Cory). 1e druk. Mooi exemplaar van een kwetsbaar boek. Gepubliceerd door de uitgever van Pijpelijntjes van Jacob Israël de Haan, met achterop reclame voor andere uitgaven van Van Cleef: van Thorn Prikker, O’Rell en Montégut, maar helaas niet van De Haan. Deze vermakelijke roman is geschreven door de Amerikaanse feministe Josephine Daskam Bacon (1876-1951). Haast al de hoofdpersonen in haar ruim veertig boeken zijn vrouwen. Ook dit boek bestaat voor een groot deel uit gesprekken tussen vrouwen, al of niet over de baby in kwestie. Deze uitgave volgt het in 1904 verschenen origineel (Memoirs of a Baby) op de voet, inclusief de vele grappige grotere en kleinere tekeningen in de tekst. Tante Lize is het pseudoniem van kinderboekenschrijfster Anna Christina Elizabeth Dopheide-Witte (1869-1951). == Translation into Dutch in fine condition.

Pasted onto a sheet of paper - on the other side of the paper a typed letter has been glued with a signed greeting to a Dutch autograph and photo collector, dated 1983. James Dickey (1923-1997) was an American poet and novelist, United States Poet Laureate in 1966.

Gevergeerd dun schrijfpapier. 26,5 x 18,0 cm. Tweemaal horizontaal gevouwen en iets gekreukt. Aandoenlijk zelfportret: Fabrès staat op een wolkenkrabber in het panorama van New York en laat een duif los met een brief, waarop staat 'To Oma from Alice and Oscar' in de richting van een molen aan de andere kant van de oceaan. Onderaan staat 'New York/ 30 May/ 1946'. Gekleurd in grijs, blauw, groen, geel en rood. 'Oma', Christina Overduin-Kaan (1862-1950), de moeder van Oscars echtgenote Alice Overduin, vierde die dag haar 84e verjaardag.

East Aurora, Roycrofters, 1901. Gebonden in suède met titel in goud. Lichtbruine zijden schutbladen. (12), 32 p. Gedrukt en met de hand verlucht op papier met watermerk Roycroft in 940 genummerde exemplaren, gesigneerd door schrijver (en uitgever) Elbert Hubbard. Titelpagina, kopvignet en alle initialen met de hand gekleurd, evenals de titelpagina. Heel geringe gebruikssporen, maar in prima conditie, ondanks de tere constructie van het boek. Planknummertje van Wim Zaal voorin. De Roycrofters in East Aurora, NY, vormden een Amerikaanse kunstenaarskolonie in de Arts & Crafts-beweging, die William Morris navolgde. De charismatische Elbert Hubbard, van wie we hier de handtekening hebben, was de stichter en motor van 1895 tot zijn dood aan boord van de Lusitania in 1915. Vroege Roycroft-uitgaven konden tegen betaling voorzien worden van met de hand gekleurde initialen en vignetten. Dit exemplaar is eveneens subtiel handgekleurd. McKenna 69.
