1825, 16,5x11,5cm, with margins 27x21cm, (stipple) engraved portrait by J. Chapman with small view of the emperor inspecting troops, some age staining, fold outside plate, John Chapman (active 1792-1823), engraver, one of the most gifted stipple engravers of the late eighteenth century, relatively little is known of the life of John Chapman. He is thought to have been mostly self-taught. During his career, Chapman engraved exceptional allegorical subjects after the designs of J. Smith and Raphael Corbould. He worked closely with Thomas Macklin on his Shakespeare series; almost half of the engravings bear his name. This portrait not in National Gallery.
