Oval portrait of James Scott, duke of Monmouth (1649-1685). Engraving on laid paper, sheet size 210 x 155 mm. Engraved by Bernard Picart after Adriaen van der Werff, published in Amsterdam 1724. This print was used in a publication: Burnet, Gilbert. Histoire des dernières révolutions d'Angleterre. The Hague: Jean Neaulme, 1725. Bernard Picart (Paris 1673-1733 Amsterdam) was a famous French draughtsman, engraver, and book illustrator active in Amsterdam. Adriaen van der Werff (Kralingen 1659-1722 Rotterdam) was a Dutch painter of portraits, devotional, mythological and erotic scenes. His brother, Pieter van der Werff (1661-1722), was his pupil and assistant. In good condition, attached to carrier sheet by all four corners. Margins cropped to the platemark. Top right corner soiled, a small stain in the right edge of the sheet. The image itself clean and crisp. References: LeBlanc vol. 3, p. 194: 574.
