Book condition : very good. - Avocat dijonnais, Claude Gilbert (1652-1720) publie en 1700 (sans nom d'auteur ni d'éditeur) un récit utopique, L'Histoire de Calejava ou de l'isle des hommes raisonnables, avec le parallèle de leur morale et du christianisme. Il y raconte le voyage fictif en Lituanie d'un protestant chassé de France par la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, Christofile, de sa fille Eudoxe (qui, née d'une mère catholique, est alternativement protestante et catholique) et de son gendre Alâtre, et surtout y rapporte leurs entretiens avec les Avaïtes, habitants d'un pays imaginaire. Pour être admis à Calejava, il faut que les voyageurs soient « persuadés de l'existence d'un Dieu, de l'immortalité de l'âme et des peines et des récompenses de l'autre vie » ; mais il faut qu'ils soient « convaincus de ces vérités par des raisons solides et naturelles et non par l'autorité ». Gilbert rejette dogmes et miracles et prêche la tolérance et la solidarité, conditions du bonheur auquel Dieu destine les hommes et qu'ils peuvent acquérir en suivant la raison. À la religion il substitue une morale sociale, à la recherche individuelle du plaisir un altruisme assurant le bien général. Christofile et son guide turc fuient le pays. Quant à Gilbert, effrayé de ses propres audaces, il jette au feu tous les exemplaires de son livre à l'exception d'un seul qui a pu, ainsi que le manuscrit, être conservé. The author, a lawyer from Dijon, realized, when he had a printed copy of his book in his hands, the possible dangerous consequences of publication and apparently convinced the printer to give him the entire edition which he destroyed with the exception of one copy. This last fact is doubted by Van Wijngaarden in his Les Odyssées philosophiques en France entre 1616 et 1789, in which work the chapter 3 is devoted to this work and its context.'Presented as scattered indications, the utopian picture occupies only a small part of the book, namely the chapters 5 & 6. Calejava was a community republic which practised economic communism relying on a rational collective urbanism and a system of public stores. Everybody has to work, but only five hours a day. The law allows divorce and encourages bigamy; celibacy, on the other hand, is severely punished and monastic chastity is considered a scandalous aberration. Children, taken away from their families at the age of four, are brought up by the State.Most of the dialogues deal with philosophical and religious ideas: it is clear that Gilbert was close to the libertine current and there are valid reasons for finding in this work an 'anti-Christian deism' (see Fortunati and Trousson). Between 1567 and 1573 he was appointed by sthe Spanish king Philipp II as governor of the Netherlands. He is best know for his actions against against the revolt of the Netherlands, where he instituted the Council of Troybles and repeatedly defeated the troops of William of Orange and Louis of Nassau in the battle of Jemmingen (1568) during the first stages of the Eighty Yaers' War. He is also known for the brutalities during the capture of Mechelen, Zutphen, Naarden and Haarlem. In spite of his military successes the revolt was not broeken and Alba was recalled to Spain.
