Corgi, London, 1983, 1st in imprint, paperback, 382pp, maps in text, [ii] ads., #FB1417, half tone photo pictorial montage upper wrapper, an extraordinary account of command during WW2, the experiences of General Sir Frank Messervy in the East African Casmpaign, the Western Desert and in Burma; from instructor at Quetta Staff College he was appointed CO 13th Duke of Connaught's Own Lancers in 1938 and in 1939 promoted Colonel and appointed GSO1 Indian 5th Infantry Division which in 1940 was sent to Sudan for the East Africa Campaign, appointed in command of 'Gazelle Force', a reconnaisance and strike formation, in March 1941 Brigadier in command 9th Infantry Brigade and after six weeks command of the Indian 4th Infantry Division which he took to the Western Desert in time for Operation Battleaxe in June and Crusader in November. In 1942 he held command of 1st Armoured and then 7th Armoured Divisions but his control of armour was not considered a success. He knew little about tanks and after a heavy defeat at Gazala he was dismissed his command in June 1942 and transferred to Cairo as Deputy CGS, Midddle East Command. In January 1943 he was made Director of AFV, GHQ India Command and in July 1943 he was appointed GOC Indian 7th Infantry Division which was sent to the Arakan in Burma. By May 1944 the division was back in the Kohima sector fighting a key battle at Naga Village. On advancing to the Chindwin and on combining with the Indian 20th Division inflicted a heavy defeat on the Japanese at Ukhurul.
