In Auguist 1941 he was commisioned from 201 OCTU Bournemouth as a 2nd Lieutenant in RASC and posted to 18 Division which was preparing for overseas service, joining the 55th Infantry Brigade Group Company RASC. They embarked for the Middle East (via Canada) in October 1941 but were diverted to Singapore arriving in Bombay in January. At the end of the month they embarked with 54th Coy and 9th Norrthumberland Fusiliers for Singapore arriving about 50 hours before the Japanese.The short-lived battle for Singapore resulted in the British surrender and three years of captivity by the Japanese as prisoners of war, spine sunned, edges and pages a little tanned, very good plus,

Btn. Cambridgeshire Regiment in April 1939, as mobilised in August, spent the next two years on defence duties in Norfolk and training before being sent to the Middle East and diverted to defend Singapore, arriving in time to defend the north coast of the island in January 1942. The Japanese invaded on 8th February and after some fierce fighting in which the author was injured came the news that British troops were to lay down their arms. By 1939 he was a sergeant in command of an anti-tank platoon. After reaching England he was sent on a commando instructor's course and he relates his training over the next two years and in August 1942 was part of the raiding force on Dieppe. He describes the raid and his eventual capture by the Germans, his escape from them and his journey through France to the south coast where they were transferred by a clandestine British trawler, HMS Sea Lion, to Gibraltar.
