See the First Division Circus at Montabaur, Germany. Two Whole Days July 11-12, 1919
Coblenz, Gorres-Druckerei, 1919. Poster; 14 1/2 x 9 1/4; thin, beige stock, printed and illustrated in red and black; small creases to corners; intersecting crease lines with small splits to edges and a tiny puncture at intersection; overall in about very good condition. An unrecorded poster, advertising the First Division Circus performances at Montabaur, it depicted a sinister-looking clown with a smiling pig by his side. If history is to be believed, there has been a peculiar symbiosis between armed forces and circuses consistently through the ages. During WWI, with soldiers facing danger and/or monotony on a daily basis, some apparently held hidden circus talent and would entertain their comrades with full-blown mini-circuses. The culmination of it all would be the American First Division Circus performances during the Occupation of 1919. For two days, the entire town of Montabaur, outside of Coblenz, would be transformed into a circus extravaganza with a street parade with elephants, horses, and floats, three-ring acts, and side-shows. It would also be remembered for a remarkable performance by the First Engineers, who managed to construct a military pontoon bridge across the Rhine in the record time of forty-one minutes and eight seconds. Very good .

Krivtsov, Alexis
Extraordinary Commission of Inquiry Appointed by Command of His Majesty the Emperor of Russia
S. l. s. n. 1916. First edition in English, n. d. (ca 1916); 10 3/4 x 7 1/2; pp. [2], 3-32; stapled, beige self-wraps; illustrated with four plates of photographs (both recto and verso); light dust-dulling to margins of wraps, with a small staples offset to front wrap (stored in a pile of other documents [?]); a few minor spots of foxing; in very good condition. A bit of a publication mystery, the report appeared to have been released, and consequently excised, from a later, much-larger one with the same name. Appointed by Emperor Nicholas I, with Senator Aleksei Krivtsov presiding over it, the commission was tasked with investigating the lives of Russian soldiers in captivity during WWI and the atrocities, perpetrated by the Germans and Austro-Hungarians, in violation of the Geneva Convention of 1906, and with certifying and releasing their findings. This specific report dealt with Russian POW in Austria and was assembled from first-person accounts, "who went through and survived the terrible days of Austrian captivity." The photographs illustrated the terrible and twisted ways prisoners had been cuffed and chained and the people in them were released prisoners, who had volunteered to "give ocular demonstration." Not in OCLC, not in the trade (as of May 2021). Very good .

This specific report dealt with Russian POW in Germany and was assembled from first-person accounts. The notice to the press, by Aleksei Krivtsov, appealed to the press to give publicity to the fact that two letters had been found among the possessions of dead German soldiers, which stated, in part: "We do not know where to put prisoners. Henceforth every Russian surrendering as a prisoner of war will be turned out in front of the line of our fortified positions to be shot." The press was encouraged to translate the letters and distribute them to "every country in the world." Not in OCLC, not in the trade (as of May 2021). Very good .
