Hailed as the Russian equivalent of Dr. Seuss, beloved poet andf author Korney Chukovsky (1882 - 1969) would be the second one to translate and popularize Walt Whitman in his country, while he was still in his early 20s. The first one would be one of giants of the Silver Age Konstantin Balmont (1867 - 1942),whom Chukovsky would consider a life-long rival and would mercilessly criticize his translations of Whitman. In fact, Korney dedicated part of his current work to specifically lambast Balmont's "Shoots of Grass" (his translation of "Leaves of Grass"). The other sections of the book featured his own translation of parts of "Leaves of Grass," as well as a biography of Walt, etc. Ultimately, Balmont would be mostly forgotten as a translator of Whitman, while Chukovsky's name would become synonymous with the latter's presence in Russian poetry. Evgenii Belukha (1889 - 1943), who illustrated the wraps, was a renowned artist and graphic designer of the early 20th century, who would also be remembered for his porcelain Soviet propaganda paintings. First edition in book form (initially appearing in three issues of the journal "Krasnaia nov" in the same year); 7 1/2 x 5 1/2; pp. [2], 5-243, [5]; beige wraps, printed in red, with an elaborate green border; closed cuts to tips of spine; two chips to fore-edge and lower corner; partially unopened; overall in very good- condition. Ilia Erenburg (1891-1967) was a writer, journalist, and translator, who left Russia after the Revolution and lived and worked in various European cities well into the 1940s. He was a prominent figure among the Russian dissident intellectuals, including Pasternak, Esenin, and Maiakovskii. During the Great Depression in the US, he wrote a series of novels that dealt with Capitalism and its workings, one of which was "The Dream Factory." Although presented as a documentary report, it was in fact a fictionalized, anti-Hollywood film industry novel. Although it carried a strong, anti-Capitalist bias, the book was not accepted by the the authorities, thus it was published in Berlin. Very good - .

An extremely-uncommon first Russian translation of Keller's The Story of My Life, published in 1905, the year of the first socialist revolution in Russia and, perhaps not coincidentally, the year that Keller first became affiliated with the Socialist Party of America. It also appears to be the first work devoted to Keller published in Russia. What makes it particularly valuable to research is that the translation is not attributed, but would appear to be an abridgment and a free adaptation, as the English-language version (1903) ran to more than 400 pages. No institutional holdings in OCLC or KVK, nor any mention of the publisher, E.V. Malysheva. If OCLC is to be believed, no complete Russian translation of Keller's autobiography appeared until 2003. A Circular, Regarding the Second Naturalized American to Be Sent to the Soviet Union to Face a Pending Death Sentence

Burke, Virginia, By the authors, 1986. Printed document; 14 x 8 1/2; single sheet, text to recto only; old crease line through the middle, else minor wear; in very good or better condition. Karl Linnas (1919 - 1987) was an Estonian-American, tried in absentia by the Soviet Government and sentenced to death in 1962 for allegedly serving as commandant of a Nazi concentration camp in Tartu in the early 1940s and for personally executing civilians, including small children. In the meantime, after WWII, he had spent time in Displaced Persons camps in Germany and had immigrated to the US in 1951, becoming a citizen in 1960. In 1979 he was charged by US immigration officials with providing false statements, in order to enter the US. In 1981, he was stripped of his US citizenship for having lied about his ties to the Nazis. In 1986, a federal appeals court upheld his deportation order and in April of that year, he was imprisoned, while awaiting the result of his final appeal. In 1987, he was flown to the Soviet Union, where he would die in a prison hospital in ST. Petersburg three months later. The current circular was created by his three daughters in August of 1986, while he was in prison awating deportation. It described a conspiracy between the Justice Department and the KGB to fabricate evidence and implored people to write to their senators in Karl's support and to contribute to their father's defense fund. A scarce publication, rumoured to have been confiscated in the entirety of its run, it was published in the midst of the Cold War as an anti-People's Capitalism propaganda. A political meme, popularized in the 1950s, it touted the success of the American economical system throughout the world. The author of the current book, allegedly basing it on official statistics and facts, attempted to disprove the existence of people's capitalism beyond a theoretical idea, calling it a mirage, or Fata-Morgana. Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty

In February of 1893, the US Senate would ratify a controversial agreement, the first ever extradition treaty between the two countries, which initially was proposed by Emperor of Russia Alexander III in 1886 and which would be quite-unfavorably received by many Americans, who feared it would affect political exiles, who had sought refuge in the United States. The treaty indeed included a political offense clause, but it also stipulated an exception for individuals that took “an attempt against the life of the head of either Government ." Nowadays, the validity of the agreement has created two camps - on the one hand, those arguing that the treaty specified "it shall remain in force for six months after notice of its termination shall have been given by either of the contracting parties" and since such notice has never been formally recorded - it is still valid; on the other hand, others speculating that with the multiple changes in government, the treaty became invalid after the October Revolution in 1917. The broadside, published by the Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty, featured a very-large table with columns for names and addresses (unused) and stated: "To the President, Senate and House of Representatives of the United States: We, the undersigned, citizens of the United States, respectfully petition you to give notice to His Majesty, the Emperor of all the Russias, that the United States of America desire to terminate the Treaty of Extradition recently made with him..[When signed please return to Society for the Abrogation of the Russian Extradition Treaty, 100 Broadway, New York City.]" Not in OCLC, not in the trade (as of January 2022). By the early 20th century, Russia repeatedly and steadfastly refused to accept passports, issued to Russian-born Jews, who had become naturalized American citizens, thus violating the provisions of the treaty. On December 13, the day of the current speech, the House of Representatives voted to abrogate it and on December 21, the Senate approved the House's decission and adopted the joint resolution. William Sulzer (1863 - 1941) was a lawyer, congressman and the 39th Governor of New York. He would be remembered as the only New York Governor to ever be impeached (for allegedly lying under oath and using campaign contributions for personal gains). Very good .
