Russia Seu Moscovia Itemque Tartaria. Commentario Topographico Atque Politico Illustratae
Leiden, Elzevier, 1630. First edition, first of two printings of the same year; 4 1/4 x 2 1/4; pp. [4], 5-327, [9]; tooled, polished calf over boards; engraved title page and woodcut vignettes at beginning of chapters; tiny bookshop label and a faint, penciled-in note to front board verso; a small, contemporary manuscript note at bottom of title page; wear and old, discreet repair to leather along spine; a small, faint stain to top margin of first few leaves only, else clean; in good to very good condition. Renowned for their pocket-size books, a convenient way in which texts circulated beyond national borders, the Elzeviers' enormous popularity was mainly based on their Latin-language editions, which came in two series - the Republics (Respublicae) and cheap, but scholarly editions of classical texts. The current book, belonging to the former, presented a compilation of details from various sources on the history, geography, economy, and the people of Russia and the Baltic and Black-Sea regions. Over time, excerpts had been attributed to Dutch scholar and linguist Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (1612 – 1653), "Michalonis Lithuani" (Michael the Lithuanian) - possibly one of two nobles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania - either Michael Glinsky (1460s - 1534), or Michal Tyszkiewicz (1533 - 1552), and others. (Willems 336) . Good .

Anonymous [Manley, Sir Roger]
The Russian Impostor: Or, the History of Muskovie, Under the Usurpation of Boris and the Imposture of Demetrius, Late Emperors of Muskovy
London, Printed by J. C. for Thomas Basset, at the George in Fleet Street, near Cliffords Inne, 1674. First Edition. First edition; 6 3/4 x 4; pp. [8], 1-250; 3/4 polished calf and marbled boards; rebacked; spine in 5 panels with raised bands and gilt decorations; engraved printer's device to title page verso; engraved vignette at beginning of first chapter; thin rubbed line along hinge of title page obscuring the first letter of the title; period brown-ink smudge and a small puncture to upper corner of title page; edges of first few leaves a bit brittle with several small nicks; two bookplates to endpapers - the first, that of Colonel Robert Coleman Hall Brock (1861 - 1906) - prominent lawyer, financier, and scientist; the second, that of Thomas Mitchell - possibly Scottish Lieutenant Colonel Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792 - 1855 ) - surveyor and explorer of Southeastern Australia; a third, period signature to bottom of last page; overall in very good condition. Called one of the earliest British scholarly histories of Russia written, the book's authorship had been attributed to several figures, including John Merrick, Chief Agent of the English Muskovy Company. In fact, the work was written by Sir Roger Manley (1626 - 1688) - soldier, translator, and author. Despite writing about the Time of Troubles without, allegedly, ever travelling to Russia, Manley still produced a secondary source of great historiographical interest. (Loewenson, Leo. “Sir Roger Manley's History of Muscovy: The Russian Impostor (1674).” The Slavonic and East European Review, vol. 31, no. 76, 1952, pp. 232–240.) (ESTC R22560, Wing M75) . Chirikof (Chirikov), E. (Evgenii)
Marka of the Pits
London, Alston Rivers Limited, 1930. First edition in English, no US equivalent, n. d. (1930); 7 1/4 x 5; pp. [4], v-vii, [1], 1-223, [1]; red cloth over boards, printed and ruled in black; pictorial dust jacket; minor rubbing to tips of spine and corners; a few scattered spots of foxing to first and last few leaves; in very good condition. Jacket unclipped, with a price of "7s. 6d. net" at the bottom right corner of the front flap, with chipping and small loss of paper to tips of spine; several pieces of transparent tape to verso; in good to very good condition. In a strikingly-illustrated jacket, though with artist unattributed, this edition would mark the first (and practically the last) appearance of any of Chirikov's works in English. Even more so, as with all works issued by the obscure London publishing house of Alston Rivers, the title would prove to be quite uncommon. Though remaining virtually unknown to English-language readers, Evgenii Chirikov (1864 - 1932) was a prolific author, highly regarded among his Russian contemporaries, including radical writer Nikolai Chernyshevsky and especially Maxim Gorky, with whom he was closely allied. In the early 1900s, Chirikov would gradually distance himself from the Revolutionary Movement, eventually completely breaking away from his past democratic allegiance after the 1917 Revolution. Expelled from Russia, he would continue writing for the Russian market from exile. Marka of the Pits dealt with poverty, prostitution, and sexual depravity among slum-dwellers living along the banks of the Volga River, below the city of Samara. The townspeople would call the settlement "the pits" and its residents - "the monkeys." As with many of Chirikov's other works, the Volga would play a central role in the book, both for its beauty, but also as a destructive force of nature, causing the death of Marka's father, having her mother commit suicide by drowning, and hurling the young woman into a dreadful, inescapable life. Very good .
