Photograph of a Railroad-Car Building Yard
S. l. s. n. 1900. Silver gelatine photograph, n. d. (ca 1900 - a small, penciled-in manuscript note on verso "1900 - 1910"); mounted on a card stock mat; photo 5 x 7, mat 10 x 12; image with minor age-toning and wear - in very good to near fine condition; mat with small chips to corners - in good to very good condition. A bit of a mystery, the photograph presumably depicted a crew at a lumber yard, or part of a rail yard, where material for train cars was manufactured. The two visible rails, mounted on concrete piers, were most probably previously-scrapped tracks - repurposed to be used for stacking lumber. Although, most of the men looked to be middle-aged and even older, the first and the thrid ones from the bottom right appeared to be boys, no older than 10. Very good .

The founding of the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad Company was a result of the urgent need to move vast quantities of coal from the coalfields of Pennsylvania to Rochester, Buffalo, and the smaller towns in western New York State. A forerunner of the BR&P was the Rochester and State Line Railroad, whose construction according to an amusing anecdote came to be in 1869, after one night during a business dinner, Mumford merchant and manufacturer Oliver Allen yelled: "Let's build a railroad!" It was completed in 1878 to a great promise and enthusiasm and by 1879, most of the stock of the company was owned by the Vanderbilt family. Alas, it was not financially sound, the Vanderbilts quickly lost interest, it was shut down in 1880 and sold to a New York syndicate. From its remains, the Rochester and Pittsburgh Railroad was created, which also went bancrupt in just 4 years. The latter was split into two parts and thus the Pittsburgh and State Line Railroad on the one hand and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad Company on the other hand were established in 1885. The latter would be one of the more successful ventures in the area for 47 years, when it would be absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Good .

'Santa Fe. " the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway System. Rules and Regulations of the Operating Department
S. l. s. n. 1909. Early 20th-century edition; 5 3/4 x 4; pp. [1], 4-197, [1]; blue cloth over card stock boards, printed in red; illustrated with drawings and tables; small rubbed spots to tips of spine and a small abrasion to top edge of front cover; spot to bottom margin of leaves, not affecting readability; overall in about very good condition. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway was chartered in February 1859 to operate between Kansas (Topeka and Atchison) and New Mexico (Santa Fe). Interestingly enough, the railroad actually bypassed Santa Fe, which it was supposed to serve, for a long time, because of the difficult terrain. The company would be one of the first to use multiple modes of transportation for freight, including an airline and a tugboat fleet. Very good .
