Stanford University Printing Blocks
S. l. (Stanford), s. n. 1935. Two blocks, n. d. (ca 1935); 10 3/4 x 14 and 10 x 11 3/4 respectively; wood base, heavy burlap fabric, and carved linoleum; first one in red, beige, and black; second one in black and faded gilt; several small chips to edges with small loss to linoleum and wood; remnants of white paint; overall in about very good condition. A pair of wonderful, Depression Era pieces, the blocks were used to print posters, advertising music events at Stanford University's Assembly Hall. The first one presented to the public "Songs from Slavic Lands" by Marya Ostrava, a Russian-American singer (Marya Ostrava Will Give Program of Slavic Songs. 1935, July 23. The Stanford Daily, p. 1), and the second one announced The Committee on Public Exercises' Invitation to a concert by Elizabeth Strong (violinist) and Bethel Melvin (pianist). Very good .

B. & K.
An Archive of Printer’S Samples
S. l. (San Francisco [?]), B. & K. 1920. First Edition. Eighty two samples, n. d. (ca1920); various sizes; cream, blue, pink, and white card stock sheets, some folded to resemble greeting cards; some with deckled edges; embossed, illustrated, gilded, and plain; all with abraded spots to verso (previously pasted in a sample book [?]), else minor wear, with occasional spotting and small creases; condition varies from very good to near fine and better. A massive archive of printing samples, from an elusive printer, possibly from the San Francisco Bay Area (provenance – previous owner), the cards presented a beautiful and quite comprehensive array of options, including menus, programs, advertising, etc. Each card included a sample number and types of inset and envelop to go with it. It also contained a unique word – “NARCOTIC,” OBLIVIOUSLY,” “NAPPY,“ and so on, and one could order the desired design by simply telegraphing that particular word to the company. Very good .
