The Effects of Flattery
S. l. s. n. 1850. Hand-colored collage, n. d. (1850s); single sheet with several die-cuts pasted on; a few faint spots to margins and a light offset to verso; light wear to edges and corners; in very good condition. A humorous piece of victorian art, from an unknown publication, but most probably British, it consisted of two compositions - showing the positive effects of flattery. The first one featured an old beggar lady managing to wrangle money out of a gentleman; the second one pictured two gentlemen - a playwright and his friend, the latter managing to secure tickets for himself and his family to the newest comedy. Very good .

(Dunne, Finley Peter)
Mr. Dooley in Peace and in War
London, George Routledge and Sons, Limited, 1899. Early edition. Early, possibly-pirated edition; 7 x 4 3/4; pp. [5], viii-xiv, [3], 18-232; beige wraps, printed and illustrated in black and white; a bit of rubbing to tips of spine; small nicks to corners of wraps; a few minor spots of foxing, mostly to first several leaves; very good condition. Finley Peter Dunne (1867 - 1936) was an American author and humorist, who would be remembered for his nationally-sindicated Mr. Dooley sketches (a fictional Irish-American bartender, whose commentaries covered various national and international events, including the Spanish-American War and its aftermath). A collection of Mr. Dooley pieces, the current "Mr. Dooley in Peace and in War," was published in book form in 1898 to great acclaim. Allegedly, it became popularin the US so quickly, a number of British publishers pirated the book and released it in Great Britain to another great success. In fact, in 1899, Dunne dedicated his second book - "Mr. Dooley in the Hearts of His Countrymen" - "To Sir George Newnes, Bart, Messrs. George Routledge and Sons, Limited, and other publishers who uninvited presented Mr. Dooley to a part of the British public." . Very good .
