Old Crow Collection of Great Bourbon Drink Recipes

(1930s - tentative date obtained from a University of Michigan library record of the same publication); approx. 3 1/2 x 6; pp. [20]; illustrated wraps die-cut into the shape of a crow, holding a scroll in its beak; a small nick and a minor crease line to the shoe of the crow on back wrap; overall in very good condition. An interesting booklet, it featured authentic cocktail recipes with "Old Crow" bourbon. The trademark alcohol was created and perfected by Scottish Chemist James C. Crow, known as the father of bourbon for inventing the sour mash process now used by most bourbon distilleries. Ill.: 0. Very good .

Montreal, Distillers Corporation Seagrams Limited, 1930. Presumed second edition, n. d. (ca 1930 - a smaller edition of 35 pages published earlier and a larger, 60-page one, published in 1933); 6 x 3; pp. [2], 5-40; textured wraps in gray and black, printed in red; lithographed illustrations throughout; a small, curcular tear through middle of spine and textblock strengthened with an extra staple, else minor wear; in very good condition. Titled after British naval administrator Samuel Pepys' eponymous ending of his days' diary entries, the publication contained 30 cocktail recipes, in groups of three to a page and facing an illustration of the particular whiskey used, with various Seagram's products. Each recipe page also included a fictitious diary entry in the style of Samuel Pepys and featured concoctions such as Mamie Taylor, Fifty-Fifty, and V. O. Fizz. The booklet was released as an advertisement for the Seagram Company, a famous Canadian whiskey distillery, which traced its fouding to 1857 and would become the largest owner of alcoholic beverage lines in the world in the 1990s. Quite uncommon, with one copy of this edition at UC Davis and one other copy in the trade. Very good .

First edition; 7 1/2 x 5; pp. [1], 2-16; stapled, orange, pictorial wraps, printed in black; illustrated with a small vignette at the end of the text; a bit of spotting along margins of wraps; light wear to edges and tips of spine; overall in very good condition. Robert Carlton Brown (1886 - 1959) was a world traveler, author, editor, bookseller, and publisher. In the early 1900s, he contributed poetry and prose to various periodicals in New York and published two novels. After, he traveled extensively through South America, Europe, and Asia with his wife Rose Brown, also an author, and lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he published a magazine, and in Paris, in the 1930s, where he issued several poetry collections. The family also toured the Soviet Union. On their return to the US, the two wrote various international cookbooks. He ran a bookstore, called Bob Brown's Books, in Greenwich Village in the 1950s. His current book contained various recipes for wines, beers, and cocktails, which in his own words were "high spots in homemade hilarity - the kind that made Great Aunt Agatha dance on the table and kick the lamp over - about the time of the Chicago fire. New edition (first published in 1950); oblong 4 1/4 x 6; pp. 2-87, [9]; pictorial, card stock wraps; leaves spiral-bound within; illustrated with photographs; light creasing to spine tips; very light overall wear; in very good to near fine condition. Although, most people associate Stouffer's with frozen food, the story actually began in 1898 in Cleveland, when James Stouffer and his son Abraham opened a creamery at a local market. After James' death in 1908, Abraham and his wife took over and grew the business, opening their first restaurant, called Stouffer Lunch, in 1924. By the 1930s, the company had restaurants in Detroit, Pittsburgh, and New York and by the 1960s - it has also expanded into the hotel business. The current booklet contained a variety of cocktails, "which had proved to be favorites" to the establishments' guests, including Frozen Pine Valley Cocktail, Scorpion Punch, and Cloud 666. It also contained a liquor dictionary, glassware guide, and appetizer suggestions. Very good .
