May the Peace of Christmas Tide, with You Through the Year Abide [Hand-Embelished Christmas Book]
S. l. s. n. 1890. Small Christmas book, set and embelished into a hand-made frame with a stand, n. d. (late 19th century); book - 3 1/2 x 4 1/4, frame - 7 x 7 1/2; book with plain, card stock wraps with laid-on, chromolithographed illustration, pp. [12]; frame constructed out of two types of padded fabric and three kinds of decorative strings in cream, beige, and copper; backed with a stiff, card stock stand to verso; a few small spots and mild general wear; overall in very good condition. A pretty piece of folk art, it was most probably hand-made as a combination greetings card, Christmas gift, and holiday memento by fashioning a frame around a small book of popular quotations. Very good .

First editions, in original box - "How to Make Fascinating Gifts for All Occasions," "How to Make Attractive Articles for Home Decorations," "The New Le Page's Gesso Craft!" and "How Boys and Girls Can Make Their Own Fascinating Toys;" 4 1/4 x 2 3/4; pp. 34 each; beige and brick-red, illustrated wraps; a few chips and nicks to edges; illustrated with in-line drawings; very good condition. Illustrated card-stock box with loss of paper to front panel; manuscript address to verso in the dedicated postal space; good condition. A wonderful set of little books, it was published as an advertisement for the Russia Cement Company's Le Page's Glue. Each book contained ideas and instructions for making a variety of household, entertainment and art objects, including book ends, shoe trees, bird houses, doll furniture (with detailed measurements and schematics), leather belts, jewelry cases, and much more. Very good .

Originally published in three volumes between 1911 and 1923 by Emmanuel Benezit (1854 - 1920) and after his death - greatly expanded, the ambitious endeavour contained close to 300 000 biographies of artists, with facsimile signatures, holdings of their works at institutions, auction results, etc. Very good .

A beautiful exhibition catalog, it also included a chapter on Andrey Avinoff (1884 - 1949) and his sayings, along with a descriptive list of his works shown. He was a world-renowned, Russian-American artist, lepidopterist, educator, iconographer, bibliophile, and Director of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History between 1926 and 1945. Very good .

Boston, L. Prang and Co. 1878. Four books, 1878 - 1879 - 'American Textbooks of Art Education, No. 5, Boston Edition,' 'American Textbooks of Art Education, No. 5, Revised Edition,' 'American Textbooks of Art Education, No. 12,' 'American Textbooks of Art Education, No. 13;' oblong 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 and 7 3/4 x 11 1/2 respectiveley; brown wraps, printed in black and ruled with an intricate border; a few of the exercises filled in pencil; two of them with light wear - in very good or better condition; the other two - fair to good - with a split along spine on one and tiny chips to corners of the other. Walter Smith (1836 - 1886) was a British author, art educator, and one of the pioneers of industrial design in the United States. Emigrating to Boston in 1871, he would be appointed Massachusetts State director of Art Education and he would write a series of textbooks of art education and design, some of the first of its kind in the US, examples of which are the current ones. Examples included Egyptian and Roman style architectural elements, plant forms, ornaments, etc. Very good .

With a summary in English. Bohdan Stebelskyi (1911 - 1994) was a graphic artist, painter, journalist, activist, and member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, including as Chairman of the society's branch in Canada. He immigrated to Toronto in 1949, where he edited the Homin Ukrainy newspaper and wrote several works on art. His current book was an authoritative study of children's illustrations, both by- and for them, and the psychology of drawing, with numerous examples from unknown little artists and from major Ukrainian artists and illustrators. Few copies at institutions; none other in the trade. Very good .
