Schmidt's final completed novel, first published in Germany in 1975 and in the U.S. in 1980 in this translation by Woods. Praised by some critics for its verbal inventiveness, many had a difficult time digesting the erotic themes of the book. Schmidt is little known outside of German-speaking areas, in part because his works present a formidable challenge to translators, but critics and writers often consider him to be one of the most important German-language writers of the 20th century.
