NORTHUP, SOLOMON
Twelve Years a Slave
Auburn, Buffalo, and London, Derby and Miller et al. 1854. Hardcover. Original blind-stamped brown boards with title in faded gilt on spine. Later but early printing ("twentieth thousand") from 1854, the year after the original edition appeared. Boards are worn and text block is pulling from spine. One illustration page is loosened and laid in. Pages are clean, lightly yellowed at edges and occasionally very lightly foxed. Faintly penciled ownership name from 1854 on front free endpage. Full title of book is "Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a Citizen of New-York, Kidnapped in Washington City in 1841 and Rescued in 1853 from a Cotton Plantation near the Red River in Louisiana." The memoir has twice been adapted for film: in 1984 by PBS for TV ("Solomon Northup's Odyssey) and for the Oscar-winning 2013 film "12 Years a Slave." Includes seven illustrations, including a frontispiece portrait of Northup. Small 8vo. 336 pp. Good .
