Landscape format measuring 275 x 210 mm. the b/w photographs in yellow borders, printed single-sided with the explanations on separately inserted pages opposite. The photographers include J. Gribble, Fripp, Caney. Original full brown leather, the title gilt-embossed on the upper board (padded) This front also has the initials E.R. gilt embossed in the bottom right corner; spine with raised bands in gilt, all edges gilt; dedication in ink dated Oct. 1895 on blank page preceding half title, Binding with rubbed corners and spine edges and top and bottom, but all in all a fine copy, rare in this state.

First edition. With 8 tinted lithograph plates. 8vo, original blue cloth gilt. 377, 2 pp. Binding a bit soiled, some foxing to the plates and endpapers and occasionally to the text, front flyleaf torn, copyright page and Preface browned from a newspaper clipping. A good copy of a scarce book. Spalding served for two and a half years as commander's clerk on board the "Mississippi," the flagship of Matthew Perry's expedition to Japan, and his book gives a personal, first-hand account of the voyage. The plates depict two Japanese in traditional dress; a view of the Cape of Good Hope; a scene in Ceylon; a scene in Loo Choo (Korea) with inhabitants in typical dress; a view of a junk in China; a scene near Yedo; a view of Mount Fuji; and a view of the harbor at Dezima. The appendix includes sailing directions for several eastern ports. Not in Smith, "American Travellers Abroad." [ WB 4].

. T. Fisher Unwin, 1882 folio, With two etchings by L.Alma Tadema, one of which is the frontispiece and a prefatory poem by Edmund W. Gosse. In cream cloth binding decorated with blue centre panel bordered by brown frame embossed onto cream cloth front cover, with titling and gilt and red floral decorations in gilt, bevelled edges. Persian lettering in the centre of the blue panel. Woodcut chapter initials and vignettes to chapter endings. Also gilt lettering and decorations on the spine. The binding is soiled and the bottom and top of the spine bent. Text in fine condition, large paper edition. [ Abu- al-Qa-sem H.asan ibn Ali- Ferdowsi- ] postage for 3.5 KG.
