STAEL-HOLSTEIN, A.L.G.NECKER, MME DE
Corinna
0. 1810. ossia L'Italia. Six volumes bound in three, Napoli, Angelo Trani, 1810; 6mo (c. 9 x 14 cm.); cont. half calf, spines gilt-ruled with ornament in blind, double red morocco labels; rubbed and worn, some headbands or tailbands a little chipped. An attractive set, each volume with the book-binder's ticket of Thomas Rigden of Dover [Ramsden, p. 140 (also half calf, gilt)], and the slightly later ownership entry on the title-pages "Frampton, Malta, 1828". 1810 was the notorious year in the author's life when her newly completed "De l'Allemagne", though passed by the Paris censor, was nevertheless seized and suppressed. This may possibly have have been the occasion for the Naples publisher to issue the romance "Corinne", which was first published in Italian in Firenze, in 1808.
