ANON.
Onomatologia Medico-Practica.
0. 1783. Encyklopädisches Handbuch für ausübende Aerzte in alphabetischer Ordnung ausgearbeitet von einer Gesellschaft von Aerzten. Three volumes [Volumes I, III & IV only, of four], Nürnberg, Raspe, 1783 - 1786; [viii] pp. 2846, 2106, 1576 columns, [xx pp. index, also printed in double columns]; contemporary half sheep, spines with raised bands and printed labels; bindings very worn and rubbed, although tight and firm, two small pieces of leather, and a numbering-label, missing from spine of Volume III, two-thirds of the leather spine of Volume IV are missing; the blank margins of a few pages are creased at the top in the outer corners. A rare encyclopaedic compendium of medical practice for German-speaking general practitioners of the time: "Wir haben bei seiner Abfassung hauptsächlich ein .. Bedürfnis practischer Aerzte, und zwar solcher zu befriedigen gesucht, denen die Vorsehung nichr Glücksgüter genug zugeworfen hat, um den zu einer nach Begriffen unsers Zeitalters eingerichteten Büchersammlung, erforderlichen Aufwand machen zu können." Sadly our set lacks Volume II. The remaining three offered here are firmly-bound and internally clean. The original owner, 'J.Nielsen', has entered his name neatly on the front free endpapers. The volumes are tick and would cost more in postage than is automatically allowed.

ARNDT, ERNST MORITZ,
Erinnerungen Aus Dem Aeusseren Leben.
. Leipzig , Weidmann'sche Buchhandlung, 1840, 381pp. orig. marbled boards, red leather title label with gilt titling. Edges and corners of binding worn, ex-libris F.H. Rheinwald/Berlin on first paste down. small stamp on title text with occ. spotting.
¶ Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769 -1860 ), German nationalist author and poet. Early in his life, he fought for the abolition of serfdom, later against Napoleonic dominance over Germany. Arndt had to flee to Sweden for some time due to his anti-French positions. He is one of the main founders of German nationalism and the 19th century movement for German unification. After the Carlsbad Decrees, the forces of the restoration counted him as a demagogue. Arndt played an important role for the early national and liberal Burschenschaft movement and for the unification movement, and his song "Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?" acted as an unofficial German national anthem. Long after his death, his anti-French propaganda was used again, in both World Wars. This, together with some strongly antisemitic and anti-Polish statements, has led to a highly critical view of Arndt today.

KANNENGIESZER, E.H.G.,
Sammlung
0. 1821. der in der Koeniglich Grosz= Britannisch= Hannoverschen Gerichten ueblichen Eidesformeln zum Gebrauch fuer Aemter, Stadtobrigkeiten, adeliche= auch Garnison= und Regiments=Gerichte. Dritte verbesserte und sehr vermehrte Ausgabe. Hannover, 1821; 104 pp.; contemporary marbled boards, spine unlettered; cont. name on front blank. Sixteen leaves of contemporary laid paper have been bound in by the first owner, with four further oaths of the same period entered in manuscript, the rest blank. A very rare handbook intended for the use of the judiciary and 'local government' civil servants in the kingdom of Hanover, and also for military trials and court martials, gathered out of the manifold legal and bureaucratic publications in which they were originally to be sought for when needed. Solemnly swearing to carrry out one's duties responsibly appears to have been a condition for being engaged for or appointed to a task or office, and the oaths are often so detailed as to provide unusually real accounts, effectively full job descriptions, of the duties of such village officers as the nightwatchman, the warden of bridges, the tax-gatherer, the turf-moor warden, the "Vogt", the midwife, and so on. The medical profession, doctors, surgeons, apothecaries are equally required to swear specific oaths to carry out their duties responsibly, as is almost anybody serving the public. Ten pages are devoted to "Der Juden-Eid", and revisions thereto; as far as we understand, the authorities seem to be wrestling with the complexity of requiring of a Jewish subject a binding oath, while not expecting him to recognise his God in the Christian God [parts of this text have scattered underlining in contemporary black ink].
