ANON.,
Homers Odyssee
0. 1802. neu travestiret; oder Ulysses am Zusammenflusse des achtzehnten und neunzehnten Jahrhunderts. "Ithaka im Jahre X". Zu finden in Mannheim bei Schwan und Goetz, 1802; 222, [ii] advertisements, [i] errata, with frontispiece; original blue-grey paper-covered boards; contemporary owner'sname on front pastedown, extremely light stain to top of frontispiece. First, and probably sole edition. A jeu d'esprit which casts a satirical eye on the manners of its period, with a remarkable copper-engraved frontispiece by d'Argent showing the protagonist - in the costume of the late eighteenth century - about to board an air balloon. A second volume is announced on page 222, but we do not believe this ever appeared.

GOETHE, JOHANN WOLFGANG VON
Briefwechsel Zwischen Goethe Und Zelter
0. 1833. in den Jahren 1796 bis 1832. Herausgegeben von Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Riemer. Six volumes, boundin three, Berlin, Verlag von Duncker und Humblot, 1833/1834; each volume approx. 450 pp.; early pebble-grain cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt and blind, boards ruled in blind, speckled edges; spines faded, with fading extending onto the boards. A fine set of the first edition of this most important correspondence between Goethe and one of his closest friends. Its provenance is a large private library built up in Travemuende in the course of the 19th Century, now dispersed, for which it appears to have been bound ca. 1850/1860. An apparently blank and unnumbered page has been partially excised after p.362 of Volume IV. The book is nevertheless complete, as we have ascertained by comparing this copy with another copy of the same edition.

HAKER, RICHARD STRUVE,
Hoelderlin.
0. 1942. Tribut einer Ehrfurcht. Bogota, 1942; 124 pp. with frontispiece portrait; 23 x 18 cm.; publisher's printed wrappers reproducing the same portrait as the frontispiece; largely unopened; neat repair to verso of wrapper. A very rare tribute to Hoelderlin published by in war-time exile. The first part of the book (about half the contents) narrates "Hoelderlin's Leben", in prose. The second part consists of "Sonette und Balladen" by Haker on Hoelderlin-related themes. This work was printed, in Colombia, at the end of 1942, in anticipation of the 100th anniversary of Hoelderlin's death.

HOFFMANN, HEINRICH,
Bastian Der Faulpelz.
0. Eine Bildergeschichte fuer Kinder.c.24.5 x 18 cm.; 2 - 24 pp. each with half-page hand-coloured illustration and letterpress verse text, all within a plain ruled border; twentieth-century canvas-backed marbled paper-covered boards; lacking the title-page and the first page, the second page torn with loss to margin and border and mounted on paper, very small marginal loss to last page also, which is mounted on paper too, some spots and finger-marks, two closed tears, but contents generally clean or fairly clean. Heinrich Hofmann, beside his profession of doctor and psychiatrist, was the author of many children's books, including "König Nussknacker" and "Der Struwelpeter". This is one of his most ingenious illustrated stories in verse, a cautionary tale about the importance of learning to read, and the dire consequences for its hero, Bastian, of not trying to. One day when he is playing truant, his dreams are interrupted by a succession of strange people who embody and display the letters of the dreaded word "Faulpelz" ("Lazybones"). He ignores their warnings. Hoffmann believed in teaching children by example, not by precept, which is why his characters so often live out the consequences of their conduct or misconduct to their bitter end. In this tale he is obviously also taking the opportunity to teach his audience some of the alphabet at the same time. Since our copy lacks the title-page (as well as page 1), we have taken the title for cataloguing purposes from another source. We believe this is the edition published in Frankfurt by the Literarische Anstalt, probably between c.1860 and c.1870, the illustrations being coloured by hand. Colour facsimiles of the two missing pages are loosely inserted at the beginning of the volume, which has been restored at some time with great care, and bound using hand-marbled paper for the boards.

JUNG-STILLING, JOHANN HEINRICH,
Heinrich Stillings Jugend.
0. 1780. Eine wahrhafte Geschichte.134pp.; WITH: Heinrich Stillings Juenglings-Jahre.188pp.; AND: Heinrich Stillings Wanderschaft. 176pp.; THREE WORKS IN ONE VOLUME, Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1780; with a few wood-cut fleurons and tail-pieces; contemporary German half calf, all edges red; binding rubbed,, particularly at corners, small chip at head of spine, only half of the black leather lettering-piece on spine present, roughly six opening pages of the first work a little embrowned and spotted, otherwise however internally fresh. The first three parts of an autobiographical novel, and all that had appeared to date, although Jung-Stilling was to continue the narrative with "Häusliches Leben" [1789], "Lehrjahre" [1804], and "Alter" [1817]. The absence of a publisher's name and of the phrase "Mit .. Privileg" suggests this edition is a "Raubdruck". a pirate edition which was cashing in on the work's great popularity. Any 18th Century edition, however, is now scarce.

KANNENGIESZER, E.H.G.,
Sammlung
0. 1821. der in der Koeniglich Grosz= Britannisch= Hannoverschen Gerichten ueblichen Eidesformeln zum Gebrauch fuer Aemter, Stadtobrigkeiten, adeliche= auch Garnison= und Regiments=Gerichte. Dritte verbesserte und sehr vermehrte Ausgabe. Hannover, 1821; 104 pp.; contemporary marbled boards, spine unlettered; cont. name on front blank. Sixteen leaves of contemporary laid paper have been bound in by the first owner, with four further oaths of the same period entered in manuscript, the rest blank. A very rare handbook intended for the use of the judiciary and 'local government' civil servants in the kingdom of Hanover, and also for military trials and court martials, gathered out of the manifold legal and bureaucratic publications in which they were originally to be sought for when needed. Solemnly swearing to carrry out one's duties responsibly appears to have been a condition for being engaged for or appointed to a task or office, and the oaths are often so detailed as to provide unusually real accounts, effectively full job descriptions, of the duties of such village officers as the nightwatchman, the warden of bridges, the tax-gatherer, the turf-moor warden, the "Vogt", the midwife, and so on. The medical profession, doctors, surgeons, apothecaries are equally required to swear specific oaths to carry out their duties responsibly, as is almost anybody serving the public. Ten pages are devoted to "Der Juden-Eid", and revisions thereto; as far as we understand, the authorities seem to be wrestling with the complexity of requiring of a Jewish subject a binding oath, while not expecting him to recognise his God in the Christian God [parts of this text have scattered underlining in contemporary black ink].
