La pièce avait d'abord été représentée en cinq actes à la Comédie Française le 23 février 1775 mais avait essuyé un échec. Beaumarchais retravailla sa pièce et la réduisit à quatre actes et elle remporta un triomphe à la représentation du 26 février.
