CLERK, THOMAS,
The Works of William Hogarth. 2 Volumes
0. 1821. (Including "The Analysis of Beauty"), elucidated by Descriptions Critical, Moral, and Historical .. to which is prefixed Some Account of his Life. London, R.Scholey, 1821; vi, [vi], 203, [iv], 96pp. + " The Analysis of Beauty" with unnumbered pages, with title-page vignettes and 86 plates; nineteenth-century half deep blue morocco over blue marbled boards, blue marbled endpapers, rebacked with matching buckram; slight rubbing to extremities of the boards and one or two small chips, marginal loss to Plate IX, but a well-bound set, professionally repaired, the contents clean. One of several handbooks to the engraved versions of Hogarth's paintings which appeared after his lifetime. Plates 54 and 55 have not been bound in, and the letterpress for "Before and After" implies they may have been deliberately omitted; there is no plate 84, but this is probably not called for, as the letterpress at this point directs the reader to the title-page vignette for the illustration; the numeration of the plates is eccentric, with plates one would expect in the first volume bound [correctly] in the second, but the plates are otherwise complete. The pages of "The Analysis of Beauty" are unnumbered, but page numbers are given in the margins of the text. apparently referring to the pagination of the first edition. This is a very interesting association copy. The front paste-down of each volume bears a decorative bookplate by Provost Blondel (Paris) of a flowery wreath with interwined initials we have not deciphered and the motto "Jamais Cesder". Inscriptions on the bookplates show that the book once belonged to the English author W.Somerset Maugham, and that he gave it as a present to the American writer Glenway Wescott. Wescott, a friend of Katherine Anne Porter and Thornton Wilder as well as of Maugham, was a widely read and admired novelist in the first half of the twentieth century, and lived in Paris for much of his life. He presented this set to the art historian Edgar Wind, who had fled Germany and had posts in the United States in the 1940s (he later became the first Professor of the History of Art at Oxford.) The inscriptions, all written in ink in the margins of the ex-libris, read: "Edgar Wind ex dono Glenway Wescott ex dono W.Somerset Maugham" and "with G.W.'s affection to E.W. - and thanks for his analyses of the spring of 1942 -".

HALL, FAIRFAX,

This work consists of a large half green morocco portfolio (approximately 50.5 x 40 cm.) containing a printed title-page and 36 colour reproductions, together with a smaller 50-page book of text (with the same title), similarly bound, in cream buckram boards backed with green morocco, which fits into a specially-engineered space on the inside of the portfolio's front board. Both text and reproductions were printed by Fairfax Hall at his own press, on specially-made papers by Alex Cowan And Sons and by W.S.Hodgkinson and Co.; the types were cast by Fairfax Hall from matrices designed by Eric Gill; the bindings are by W.T.Morrell and Co. The whole edition was limited to 105 sets. This is number 44. The spine of the portfolio is lightly stained, the boards lightly spotted, with a pale water-stain on the front board that also reaches part of the morocco on the front. A very good copy. [postage or carriage on this rather large portfolio would exceed postage rates for standard books, please inquire first ] ( private press ).

PASSAUER, L.V.,
Die Gold'ne Chronik Von Rakoczy.
0. La Grande Histoire du Rakoczy. The Golden Chronicle of Rakoczy.[Munich, c. 1843]; oblong album format: 18 x 24 cm.; lithographed pictorial title-page, 10 humorous lithographic plates [one folding] by Herwegen after Passauer, with unnumbered text-pages; original illustrated cloth-backed boards with two further illustrations; boards a little dusty, with two or three brown ink-stains, a little very, very light marginal browning or spotting. First edition. A very well preserved ephemeral souvenir of the water-cure at Bad Kissingen, offering serious information in palatable form. The drawings, mostly quite busy caricature scenes, are both satirical and affectionate. Thieme-Becker knows no more about Passauer than that he was "Genremaler und Radierer, um 1842", while the life and work of the Cologne-born lithographer, Peter Herwegen [1814-1893], who settled in Munich in 1837, are documented in detail, although the present work is not mentioned.

PILKINGTON, M.,
A Dictionary of Painters
0. 1805. from the Revival of the Art to the Present Period. A New Edition, with Considerable Alterations, Additions, an Appendix, and an Index, by Henry Fuseli, R.A. London, 1805; 4to; xx, [ii],, 694, [xx] pp.; contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece, marbled boards; corners rubbed, spine and front hinge a little rubbed, a few preliminary pages bound in the wrong order but complete; a good and handsome copy. Pilkington dedicated the original edition of his Dictionary to the President and Council of the Royal Academy. This is the first edition of Fuseli's edition, containing many new biographical articles, and a short additional Preface. Fuseli revised and expanded this 1805 edition in a new edition five years later. The editorship and additions by Fuseli, a leading exponent of English, or rather of European Romantic painting, as well as a scholar of Fine Art, make this an invaluable work.

TAYLOR, TOM, (ED.),
Life of Benjamin Robert Haydon,
. 1853. Historical Painter, from his Autobiography and Journals. Second Edition. Three volumes, London, 1853; xvi, 419, viii, 407, viii, 419 pp. AN EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY with scores of plates from Victorian and earlier sources, mostly portraits; bound by Riviere & Son in early 20th century brown half morocco over cloth boards, spines gilt in compartments with raised bands, exremities a little rubbed; plates to Volumes I and II damp-stained, mostly in the margins (see below), a few light marginal pencil marks. Today Haydon is better remembered for his remarkable diary and tragic end than for the historical painting he tried desperately to promulgate. His writings are replete with anecdotes, of contemporaries, artistic and others, records of encounters and friendships, and trenchant, if controversial, criticisms and judgements (a large number of the people referred to or portrayed are illustrated through the plates that have been added by the binder). Many of the plates added to the first two volumes damp-stained but mostly in the margins: many of the plates were window-mounted, and it is then ususally only the mounts that display marks; the text in these volumes is not stained, though it is very slightly rippled at the outer edge. Volume III is unaffected by stains. The plates comprising the extra illustrations are the usual mixture for the time of binding of mostly steel-engraved, or copper-engraved, portraits and views, usually relating to the text opposite which they are bound in, some common, some scarce. They would be hard to assemble nowadays.

WAAGEN, G.F.,
Kunstwerke Und Kunstler
0. 1837. in England. Berlin, 1837/1838. Two volumes; xvi, 520, iv, 620, v - x pp.; contemporary half calf, spines panelled, with gilt rules and decoration, gilt lettering, marbled boards, marbled endpapers, marbled edges; one joint a little rubbed but binding firm, light marignal damp-staining to first and last few pages of Volume I, contents lightly embrowned; a good set in a very attractive contemporary [German] binding. These two volumes form the first part of the work "Kunstwerke und Kuenstler in England und Paris", for which the series title is bound here opposite the main title. It is fairly certain that the "England" volumes (which comprise two of the three volumes) were for sale separately at the time, since the contemporary title on the spines is "Kunstwerke und Kuenstler in England". The anomaly in the pagibnation in the second volume results from the binder's deciding to bind pages v - x,, with the contents lof Volume II, at the end of the book rather than the beginning. Mounted on the rear paste-downs of each volume is the ex-libris of Conrad Heinrich Weigelt.
