ANON.
Mitteilungen Der Zurischen Gesellshaft
0. 1842. fur vaterlandische Altertumer VI.: Die Stiftung des Klosters Kappel und das Geschlecht der Freiherren von Eschenbach. [Zurich,] gedruckt bei J.J.Ulrich, 1842; 4to; 8pp. with engraved plate, and large folding coloured lithograph; publisher's printed wrappers, printed within a decorative border; scattered light foxing and slight water-stain to lower margin of text and of the plain plate. A monograph on the 12th Century Cistercian monastery at Kappel, but primarily on its contemporary and later connections with the von Eschenbachs and the vicissitudes of that family, including under the names of Schnabelburg or Schwarzenberg. The uncoloured plate is a copper-engraved view of the church by Hegi, The folding lithograph, finely coloured by hand, illustrates the first page of this monograph, according to which the early medieval church was originally famous for its over 60 stained or painted glass windows, though only six survived to the time of this publication. The plate shows all nine panels of a single window, at its centre the Crucifixion.

CLERK, THOMAS,
The Works of William Hogarth
0. 1821. (Including "The Analysis of Beauty"), elucidated by Descriptions Critical, Moral, and Historical .. to which is prefixed Some Account of his Life. Two volumes, London, R.Scholey, 1821; vi, [vi], 203, [iv], 96pp. + " The Analysis of Beauty" with unnumbered pages, with title-page vignettes and 86 plates; nineteenth-century half deep blue morocco over blue marbled boards, blue marbled endpapers, rebacked with matching buckram; slight rubbing to extremities of the boards and one or two small chips, marginal loss to Plate IX, but a well-bound set, professionally repaired, the contents clean. One of several handbooks to the engraved versions of Hogarth's paintings which appeared after his lifetime. Plates 54 and 55 have not been bound in, and the letterpress for "Before and After" implies they may have been deliberately omitted; there is no plate 84, but this is probably not called for, as the letterpress at this point directs the reader to the title-page vignette for the illustration; the numeration of the plates is eccentric, with plates one would expect in the first volume bound [correctly] in the second, but the plates are otherwise complete. The pages of "The Analysis of Beauty" are unnumbered, but page numbers are given in the margins of the text. apparently referring to the pagination of the first edition. This is a very interesting association copy. The front paste-down of each volume bears a decorative bookplate by Provost Blondel (Paris) of a flowery wreath with interwined initials we have not deciphered and the motto "Jamais Cesder". Inscriptions on the bookplates show that the book once belonged to the English author W.Somerset Maugham, and that he gave it as a present to the American writer Glenway Wescott. Wescott, a friend of Katherine Anne Porter and Thornton Wilder as well as of Maugham, was a widely read and admired novelist in the first half of the twentieth century, and lived in Paris for much of his life. He presented this set to the art historian Edgar Wind, who had fled Germany and had posts in the United States in the 1940s (he later became the first Professor of the History of Art at Oxford.) The inscriptions, all written in ink in the margins of the ex-libris, read: "Edgar Wind ex dono Glenway Wescott ex dono W.Somerset Maugham" and "with G.W.'s affection to E.W. - and thanks for his analyses of the spring of 1942 -".

CRUIKSHANK , GEORGE (ILLUSTRATOR)
The Comic Almanac.
0. An Ephemeris in Jest and Earnest. A COMPLETE SET, comprising 19 volumes, all first editions, and in the ORIGINAL WRAPPERS or original flexible cloth, London, Tilt & Bogue [later David Bogue], 1835 - 1853. Over the 19 years of its publication, the Comic Almanac, enjoyed various editors, including the pseudonymous "Rigdum Funnidos", Henry Mayhew, and Robert B. Brough, and experienced a reduction in format from octavo to duodecimo in the years 1848 and 1849. The stiff paper wrappers with designs by Cruikshank finally gave way in 1850 to stiff gilt-decorated cloth-covered wrappers. What never changed was the inclusion of twelve etched plates by George Cruikshank in each issue, as well as black-and-white illustrations in the text by various hands. Larger folding frontispieces, also by Cruikshank, etched and finely coloured by hand, were added from the year 1850. The etchings for "The Comic Almanac" reflect his close observation of Victorian society and those for the earlier issues are considered some of his best work. The spines of the first seven volumes are worn, with a little loss, particularly at head and foot, though the lettering is largely present; the rear wrapper of the 1840 volume is loose; the next six volumes have been very neatly, professionally rebacked using old material, either paper or fine-grained cloth, and match the plain spines of the last volumes' original cloth. There are two or three contemporary ownership entries, and a few pencil entries for 1843. The contents are in good condition, though there is slight spotting and browning to the edges of the plates from 1843 to 1847. It is very rarely that a complete series in the original ephemeral bindings is offered.

DALZIELL [ED.],
A Round of Days
0. 1866. Described in Original Poems by some of Our Most Celebrated Poets and in Pictures by Eminent Artists engraved by the Brothers Dalziell. London, George Routledge and Sons, 1866; 4to; [xii], 93 numbered leaves, printed on rectos only, with wood-engraved illustrations on nearly every leaf, [ii]pp.; publisher's richly-decorated cloth, spine gilt to an Arabesque design, boards richly gilt with red and blue paper onlays, a.e.g.; skillfully sewn and recased, with new endpapers, short split at head of spine, corners worn with splits, light, mainly marginal foxing (heavier to prelims and title-page), spots to a few pages affecting the image, marginal finger-mark on page 60, early inscription on original yellow front endpaper. Scarce, and would be virtually unobtainable unfoxed and tight in its original binding as issued. Nevertheless a classic, and a high-point in Victorian book illustration and book production. The volume is highly regarded both for its illustrations and for its John Leighton binding, while the authors include William Allingham, Christina Rossetti, George Macdonald, Jean Ingelow, Lady Caroline Norton, Mrs Craik, and the Howitts. "One of the finest of the illustrated gift books" (Gleeson White, p.125]. Ray 153.

DOYLE, RICHARD,
The Foreign Tour of Messrs Brown,Jones and Robinson
0. 1867. Being the History of what they saw and did in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. New York, D.Appleton & Co. 1867; 4to; [iv], "80" [actually 79] pages of text with black-and-white lithographic illustrations, printed on one side of each page only; publisher's blue cloth, illustrated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt; spine professionally repaired, with most of original cloth spine laid down, front free endpaper renewed with old waxed paper; boards bright though minimally stained or discoloured here and there, with two or three slight "bubbles" and spots of wear on corners and one edge, small light-brown marks to lower margin of pages 9, 65 & 66. A good copy, the binding bright and contents generally clean, skillfully repaired. The 49th leaf or page is puzzlingly numbered "49 & 50" in the lithographic plate, so the book was issued with only 79 pages beyond the prelims.

PASSAUER, L.V.,
Die Gold'ne Chronik Von Rakoczy.
0. La Grande Histoire du Rakoczy. The Golden Chronicle of Rakoczy.[Munich, c. 1843]; oblong album format: 18 x 24 cm.; lithographed pictorial title-page, 10 humorous lithographic plates [one folding] by Herwegen after Passauer, with unnumbered text-pages; original illustrated cloth-backed boards with two further illustrations; boards a little dusty, with two or three brown ink-stains, a little very, very light marginal browning or spotting. First edition. A very well preserved ephemeral souvenir of the water-cure at Bad Kissingen, offering serious information in palatable form. The drawings, mostly quite busy caricature scenes, are both satirical and affectionate. Thieme-Becker knows no more about Passauer than that he was "Genremaler und Radierer, um 1842", while the life and work of the Cologne-born lithographer, Peter Herwegen [1814-1893], who settled in Munich in 1837, are documented in detail, although the present work is not mentioned.

PFIZER, GUSTAV,
Der Nibelungen Noth
0. 1843. Illustrirt mit Holzschnitten nach Zeichnungen von Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld und Eugen Neureuther. Die Bearbeitung des Textes von Dr. Gustav Pfizer. Stuttgart & Tuebingen, Cotta, 1843; "4to" [c. 29 x 21.5 cm].; [viii], 430, [ii] pp.; contemporary half finely-ribbed diamond-patterned cloth over plain boards; edges and extremities worn, with slight, inconspicuous loss on hinges, two or three small stains to front board, spotting to pp. [i] - [viii], and very occasional odd further spots (a few on top edge),, marginal embrowning to contents, with a slight indentation in extreme edge of top margins of ca. 40 pp.some pages unopened. First edition of one of the major works of German Romantic book illustration, the text printed throughout within a scrolled rule border, with decorative initials, marginal illustrations, and ornaments incorporated in the text as well as half-page and full-page illustrations. Schnorr took over six of his own designs for his Nibelungen frescoes in the new Muenchener Residenz for this work (hence the printed dedication to King Ludwig of Bavaria) and added new designs and decorations: all are strongly in the tradition established by Peter von Cornelius in a series of etchings published in 1817. This work is widely celebrated, and features in major exhibitions on German illustration of the period, including "Die Kunst der Illustration", Wolfenbuettel, 1986-7, No. 24 (p.59 of the catalogue). PILKINGTON, M.,
A Dictionary of Painters
0. 1805. from the Revival of the Art to the Present Period. A New Edition, with Considerable Alterations, Additions, an Appendix, and an Index, by Henry Fuseli, R.A. London, 1805; 4to; xx, [ii],, 694, [xx] pp.; contemporary half calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco lettering piece, marbled boards; corners rubbed, spine and front hinge a little rubbed, a few preliminary pages bound in the wrong order but complete; a good and handsome copy. Pilkington dedicated the original edition of his Dictionary to the President and Council of the Royal Academy. This is the first edition of Fuseli's edition, containing many new biographical articles, and a short additional Preface. Fuseli revised and expanded this 1805 edition in a new edition five years later. The editorship and additions by Fuseli, a leading exponent of English, or rather of European Romantic painting, as well as a scholar of Fine Art, make this an invaluable work.

TAYLOR, TOM, (ED.),
Life of Benjamin Robert Haydon,
0. 1853. Historical Painter, from his Autobiography and Journals. Second Edition. Three volumes, London, 1853; xvi, 419, viii, 407, viii, 419 pp. AN EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPY with scores of plates from Victorian and earlier sources, mostly portraits; bound by Riviere & Son in early 20th century brown half morocco over cloth boards, spines gilt in compartments with raised bands, exremities a little rubbed; plates to Volumes I and II damp-stained, mostly in the margins (see below), a few light marginal pencil marks. Today Haydon is better remembered for his remarkable diary and tragic end than for the historical painting he tried desperately to promulgate. His writings are replete with anecdotes, of contemporaries, artistic and others, records of encounters and friendships, and trenchant, if controversial, criticisms and judgements (a large number of the people referred to or portrayed are illustrated through the plates that have been added by the binder). Many of the plates added to the first two volumes damp-stained but mostly in the margins: many of the plates were window-mounted, and it is then ususally only the mounts that display marks; the text in these volumes is not stained, though it is very slightly rippled at the outer edge. Volume III is unaffected by stains. The plates comprising the extra illustrations are the usual mixture for the time of binding of mostly steel-engraved, or copper-engraved, portraits and views, usually relating to the text opposite which they are bound in, some common, some scarce. They would be hard to assemble nowadays.

These two volumes form the first part of the work "Kunstwerke und Kuenstler in England und Paris", for which the series title is bound here opposite the main title. It is fairly certain that the "England" volumes (which comprise two of the three volumes) were for sale separately at the time, since the contemporary title on the spines is "Kunstwerke und Kuenstler in England". The anomaly in the pagibnation in the second volume results from the binder's deciding to bind pages v - x,, with the contents lof Volume II, at the end of the book rather than the beginning. Mounted on the rear paste-downs of each volume is the ex-libris of Conrad Heinrich Weigelt.
