Performed by Captain James Cook, F.R.S. by Royal Authority, containing the Whole of his Discoveries in Geography, Navigation, Astronomy &c. with Memoirs of his Life, and Particulars Relative to his Unfortunate Death. Embellished wit Engravings. London, published by J Robins and Co. Albion Press .. 1821; 4to; [xii], 798 pp. [ii], double column, with frontispiece portrait, engraved general title-page, three further engraved title-pages (all with copper-engraved vignettes), 13 copper-engraved plates, and a few wood-engraved vignettes; contemporary marbled calf, spine richly decorated in gilt and black, marbled endpapers; hinges worn, headband rubbed and split with a little loss, the first gathering, with frontisp. engraved title-page, and preface, has some time been re-fixed with adhesive tape, leaving brown staining on the inner margins there and the main engraved title-page frayed, marginal damp-stain to the next engraved title-page, first plate working loose and frayed in outer margin; the body of the book tightly bound and generally clean though there are a few stains and some marginal finger-marks; the tenth plate, like the first, is working loose and a little frayed in the outer margin. An early, comprehensive narrative of Cook's three voyages, with good illustrations.

A resding copy of the first volume, a good copy of the second.

London, John Murray, 1890; VIII, [ii], 412 pp.; contemporary prize binding of blue morocco, spine richly gilt in compartments with raised bands, gilt border and roundel with the arms of the Law Society on boards, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, presentation plate on front fixed endpaper; minimally rubbed at extremities. The study pays particular attention ancient Irish law - "Brehon Law", its technicalities and importance, with chapters on "Kinship as the basis of Society", "The Tribe and the Land", "The Chief and his Order" "the Chief and the Land" etc. iA very good copy, presented by the Law Society as an honorary distinction to William Frederick Taylor Morgan for achieving third place in the First Class of the Honours Examination. It records that his clerkship had been at the London firm of Ellis, Munday and Clarke. The rear paste-down bears the minute ticket of the Society's usual choice of binder, J.Low of Chancery Lane. [We have listed separately a set of two similar morocco prize bindings from the same provenance, James Bryce's "The American Commonwealth", London and New York, 1891].

La Veridique Description du Royaume Africain, Appelé, tant par les Indigènes que par les Portugais, le Congo, telle qu'elle a ete tirée récémment des explorations d'Édouard Lopez, par Philippe Pigafetta, qui l'a mise en langue italienne. Traduite pour la première fois en français sur l'edition latine fait par les frères de Bry, en 1598 ..Bruxelles, J.J.Gay, 1883; 213pp. title printed in red and black, with three folding maps; publisher's printed wrappers; two creases in front wrapper, slight bump to top of inner margins of the last c. 60 pp.two gatherings working loose, pages partly unopened. Printed in an edition of 500 copies. Apparently the first edition in French. Even the publisher is unsure to whom to attribute the work: although the title-page names the author as Philippe Pigafetta (translated by Leon Cahun), the spine gives Ed. Lopez as author, rather than as principle source. Rare.

Washington, 1877; 4to; [iv], 3, [i], 635 pp. with frontispiece, plates, and folding, colour-printed map in pocket inside rear board, boards dull and a little scratched, edges and extremities rubbed and worn, very short split in cloth of rear joint, base of spine and corners frayed, inner hinge split but firm. The scarce original edition. Most of the deficiences described in its outward condition arise from the book's size and weight. With a contemporary entry on the front blank from an Albert Seissel to Professor C.Schoenborn, dated New York, Oct. 10 [18]81. PLEASE NOTE BOOK IS RATHER HEAVY, The book weighs 3.5 KG when wrapped.

London, Henry S.King & Co. 1877; xvii, 468pp. with frontispiece, plates, & large folding map; contemporary magenta calf, spine gilt in compartments with raised bands, green morocco lettering piece, gilt arms on front board, marbled endpapers and edges, corners rubbed at tips, very slight wear to front hinge, map creased and a little torn, without loss. First edition in English, of which Rink himself writes in his preface: "My Danish Original in this its English dress has been so much altered that it must be considered a new book." The binding, by Bickers & Son, is a prize binding for the City of London Freemen's Orphan School. The presentation plate on the front paste-down has been removed, which has left the marbled endpaper there imperfect.

Paris, chez Gueffier jeune, 1791; viii, 341pp. with very large folding map on heavy paper; contemporary French red morocco, spine gilt in compartments, black leather lettering-piece, narrow triple gilt rule to boards. marbled endpapers, a.e.g.;small early ink-stain and small abrasure to surface of the rear board; about the first half of the contents have taken on a concave shape around the folded map bound after the "Avant-propos". Very rare first edition, complete with the map.
