FRISHMAN, JUDITH (ed.)
New perspectives on Jewish historiography.MBI Studies No. XIII ISBN 9789082265569
Amsterdam, Menasseh ben Israel Instituut, 2017. 115 pp. New. Paperback. The art of writing about Jewish History has a long history itself, and is still developing. The three articles in this issue of Menasseh ben Israel Institute Studies, written by prominent theoreticians of Jewish Historiography, discuss the origins of the writing about Jewish History, its development and change in the light of societal and academic debates on history writing. Andreas Gotzmann discusses how a 'minority'-perspective has led Jewish historiography to remain a conservative endeavor. Klaus Hödl argues that mainstream historiography, in adhering to unqualified notions of assimilation and acculturation, has ignored popular culture and hampered our understanding of the interactive nature of Jewishness. Wim Klooster traces the consequences for Jewish Historiography in the wake of new research into the Atlantic World in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their new perspectives on Jewish Historiography will be of interest to all interested in Jewish History writing, whether scholarly or popular. ISBN: 9789082265569

GINZBERG, LOUIS
The legends of the Jews. 7 vols. (Complete set) Philadelphia 1909-1938. Reprint. Complete set with index-volume.
Philadelphia, Jewish Publication Society of America, 1968. Small handwritten signature on flyleaves and titlepages. Else very good. No underlinings, annotations or any other marks.Orig. blue cloth. Slight wear to spines. Vol. VII published in 1938. Judaica. Judaism. Jewish literature. Heavy set, for shipment outside Europe extra postage will be required. A comprehensive collection of Aggadot dealing with Biblical personages and events. This collection also considers Pseudepigrapha of confirmed Jewish origin as well as Jewish legends found within Patristic Christian texts. The legendary material is presented in a smooth and mostly uninterrupted narrative manner. When conflicting versions of a legend exist, Ginzburg tries to relay the common tale while leaving the detailed discussion of the different versions to the scholarly annotations. In addition to the legends contained within, Volume III, focusing specifically on the life and deeds of Moses, also offers symbolic explanations of certain Jewish laws. Providing the detailed scholarly backdrop for the narrative style of the first four volumes, the Notes gathered in Volumes V and VI discuss the collected legends in terms of sources, authorship, traditions, language and content and more. In Volume VII, Boaz Cohen combines alphabetical, chronological and systematic principles to offer a comprehensive index of all the relevant themes, concepts, place names and personal names appearing in Ginzberg's narrative work. In addition, Cohen provides an index of Hebrew and Aramaic phrases as well as an index of scriptoral passages.
