, Candide En Dannemarc, Ou L&Apos;Optimisme Des HonnãƒâªTes Gens
Candide En Dannemarc, Ou L&Apos;Optimisme Des HonnãƒâªTes Gens
Geneve, Not Stated, 1769 . Leather. A second edition of this extremely scarce continuation of Voltaire's Candide, set in Denmark, written anonymously. The second edition. First published in 1767. Very scarce work, in any early edition. Bound in full calf, retaining the blanks and half title. Written anonymously, mimicking Voltaire. This entertaining tale continues the story of Candide, a character first introduced in Voltaire's French satire. It provides an interesting conclusion to the misadventures of Candide. As the title suggests, in 'Candide en Dannemarc' we follow the titular character to Denmark, where they are living in a luxurious Copenhagen townhouse with their wife, Zenoide. Before achieving this life, the couple must endure a number of trials, ending with Candide leaving Denmark to take up a position as the Danish ambassador to Russia. An amusing work, this tale is particularly known for its satirical portrayal of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, presenting him as a struggling composer and writer living in Copenhagen. In the original French. Bound in full calf. Endpapers renewed. Retaining blanks and half title. Externally, worn, with extensive worming and loss to leather. Hinges are slightly strained, but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
