Transfiguration and stage tricks. Vanishingly scarce, not recorded on Copac only one on Worldcat. Number 35 from the 'British Standard Handbooks' series. Undated, Worldcat estimates date to be 1885 from Clarke & Blind.  This was prior to Spencer Blackett's acquisition of the publishers in 1887. The British Standard Handbooks series were originally sold at 2d each and are advertised as 'A New Series of Illustrated Practical Handbooks of Sports and Pastimes&apos. The rear wrap states that 'These Handbooks are perfect encyclopaedias of information upon their respective topics they readily commend themselves as marvels of cheapness&apos. This title looks into the creation of giants and dwarfs for Victorian burlesque theatre. There are also many other tricks and performances from Burlesque theatre described and explained such as 'The Three Legged Drawf', 'The Collapsible Gentleman', 'The Man-Pig' and 'The Explosive Spider.' Burlesque in the Victorian era was a theatrical extravaganza. It features caricature, parody and travesty. In the original paper wraps. Externally, smart with some creasing to the extremities. A very scarce first edition of this playbill for the English National Opera's 1987-88 production of 'Orpheus in the Underworld', illustrated throughout by Gerald Scarfe. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. A playbill for the 1987-1988 English National Opera production of 'Orpheus in the Underworld&apos. Illustrated throughout by Gerald Scarfe, who designed the sets and costumes for this production. With an interesting history on the opera, which was first performed in two acts in 1858, and in four acts in 1874. The music for the comic opera was written by Jacques Offenbach, and the words by Hector Cremieux and Ludovic Halevy. The opera is a parody of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. Scarfe is a cartoonist who is best known for his contributions to 'The Sunday Times', and 'The New Yorker&apos. He was also the production designed for the 1997 Disney 'Hercules&apos. The Souvenir Programme for Marie Tempest's jubilee matinee organised by the Daily Telegraph for Tuesday May 28th 1935. All the proceeds from this jubilee performance formed a special fund to help actors and actresses when they are ill. The programme is a gracious tribute to Miss Tempest and is beautifully illustrated and presented. There are contributions written by Sir James Barrie, W. Somerset Maugham, Sir Edward German, Sir Landon Ronald, Noel Coward, St. John Ervine and W. A Darlington. There is also a loose slip for  'Addition to the Programme.' Marie Tempest was an English singer and actress, who became a famous soprano in late Victorian light opera and Edwardian Musical comedies. Signed by the author, Reginald Fraser Amonoo and dated 1970. This theses was written whilst Amonoo was studying for a Doctorate at University of Paris. Amonoo is a Docteur en Litterature Francaise and has written several published papers such as ' La Rome de Corneille Mythes et Realities' and 'Reflections on Language Situations with Particular reference to Ghana&apos. This work analyses the theatre of Corneille in the context of the consulate, empire and restoration. It looks at the survival of Corneille's theatre and its relevance. This work is in French. Corneille was a French tragedian. He is regarded to be one of the great seventeenth-century French dramatists alongside Moliere and Racine. In a quarter cloth binding with paper wraps. A well bound, very scarce first edition of this tract looking at the dramatic talents of William Henry West Betty, or 'The Young Roscius&apos. Rebound, in a stunning half calf binding with marbled boards. With half title. These critical essays, which have been written by 'gentlemen of distinguished literary talents' and 'theatrical amateurs' have been compiled by James Bisset of Birmingham. Jams Bisset was a Scottish-born manufacturer, artist and poet who was a notable figure in Birmingham's cultural and commercial life. He was a prominent member of the Birmingham Book Club. A very scarce work. Undated, dated using the British library entry on copac, 1805. Other entries, including the University of Oxford, state this work to be from 1804. These essays regard Master Betty or 'the young Roscius&apos. Betty was a popular child actor of the nineteenth century. He showed his desire for the stage from the age of eleven and his first role was Osman in Voltaire's 'Zair&apos. Other roles played include Young Norval in John Home's 'Douglas' and Hamlet. These essays were published at the start of Betty's career, and Bisset notes to the editor's preface 'the editor does not wish to influence or to bias the minds of the public- his only aim is to enable them to judge for themselves&apos. A good example of this very scarce work. In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound.
