A vanishingly scarce treatise by Robert Brown, looking at the distressing state of the agricultural industry in the nineteenth century. The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.A treatise by the farmer Robert Brown in which he laments the current state of agriculture in Britain, and looks into how to rectify the issues. The letters included in this volume had originally been published in the 'Edinburgh Courant' and other newspapers, for which Brown used the pseudonym 'Verus&apos.The first half of the nineteenth century saw a lot of agricultural distress, in part due to the Enclosure Acts and the Corn Laws. Enclosure in rural Britain led to riots and much social unrest. The Corn Laws were high tariffs and trade restrictions brought in on imported food and corn, between the years 1815 and 1846.Brown was close friends with fellow agriculturist George Rennie. He also published 'View of the Agriculture of the West Riding of Yorkshire' and 'Treatise on Rural Affairs&apos. In a quarter calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Spine is a little faded. A little light rubbing to the leather. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with scattered spots. London, Privately printed, 1809. Unbound. A very scarce report of a meeting held in 1809 concerning parliamentary reform, chaired by Sir Francis Burdett. A very scarce work, unbound, but sewing is intact. Sir Francis Burdett (1770-1844) was a British MP. His principal efforts were directed towards procuring a reform of Parliament. He anticipated the Chartist movement by suggesting universal male suffrage, equal electoral districts, vote by ballot, and annual parliaments. However, his motions were met with very little support. This very scarce volume gives a report of a meeting regarding parliamentary reform, chaired by Burdett in 1809. Unbound but with sewing intact. A very scarce work, disbound, with many pages uncut. 20 pages collated; this work is complete. This volume contains the speech gave by Sir Francis Burdett when dining with his constituents at the Crown and Anchor Tavern, 31st July 1810, after his release from the Tower of London. After questioning the House of Commons on their imprisonment of the radical John Gale Jones, Burdett was himself imprisoned in the Tower of London. He was released when parliament was in recess, and then brought legal actions against the speaker and the sergeant-at-arms, but the courts upheld the action of the House. This is a very scarce work, giving fascinating insights into radical political activism in early 19th century Britain. Disbound. Externally fairly smart, but with small losses to the rear and a small closed tear. This work is disbound meaning that it is no longer sewn together. "In Which the System of That Negotiation With Regard to Our Colonies and Commerce is Considered." Disbound.This is a first edition, early impression. Wanting the half-title as is common with this work. However, the half-title retains the issue number. Catchword 'NT' to page 49, and signature D2 is signed on the recto only. Upon Burke's retirement from Parliament in 1794 he received a pensions from Pitt's government. The Duke of Bedford and Earl of Lauderdale were two of many peers that criticized this grant as it was 'inconsistent with Burke's own principles of economical reform&apos. The Concise Oxford Companion to English Literature refers to this work as 'one of the greatest masterpieces of irony and feeling in the English language, comparing his own services to the state with those rendered by the duke of Bedford and his house, which had been the recipient of enormous grants from the Crown.'  Disbound. A highly interesting pamphlet by Edmund Burke regarding attacks made upon him and his pension in 1796 by the Duke of Bedford and the Earl of Lauderdale. A fascinating letter by Edmund Burke, upon attacks made upon him and his pension by the Duke of Bedford and the Earl of Lauderdale, sent to a noble lord, ESTC notes him to be Earl Fitzwilliams. Published in 1796, it went through many editions in the same year. Unfortunately without the half-title, it is impossible to determine the exact printing. ESTC Reference could be: T2758; T37959; T37960; T37962; T37963; T37965; T37966; T37967; T181681. In 1794 Burke received a vote of thanks from the House of Commons for his services inn the Hasting Trials and he immediately resigned his seat to be replaced by his son Richard, who died shortly after. Upon is death, King George III wished to create him Earl of Beaconsfield however due to the death of his son, he could not receive such honour and its attractions, but he would accept a pension of £2,500. This was criticised by the Duke of Bedford and the Earl of Lauderdale, to whom Burke replied in this letter. In the letter, he argues that 'to innovate is not to reform,' and that he was awarded on merit while the Duke of Bedford receives it on inheritance alone. A disbound copy. Externally smart, the title page slightly loose, tape repaired by a previous owner to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean with only a minor offsetting to the title page and rear leaf, and a touch of age toning, as usual. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

A smart tree calf volume consisting of one very scarce first edition work of biographical sketches of French figures, and two early impression works of letters from statesman, Whig politician and philosopher Edmund Burke. The first work present in the 1796 publication of two letters written by Burke in opposition to Prime Minister William Pitt as he sought peace with the French Directorate. Burke's opinion on the matter was highly regarded, as his prior 'Reflections on the Revolution in France' had already made many correct predictions on the matter.As the edition statement to this work is derived from the half title, and the work is here bound without the half title, the edition present here can only be identified as being any impression between the second and ninth, as pagination for the first and later editions differs, and there are no further issue points.The second work present, published in the same year, and also without the half title to indicate impression - as is common with this work - is Burke's defence of the pension he was awarded by Pitt's government following his retirement. The letter is regarded by the Concise Oxford Companion to English Literature as 'one of the greatest masterpieces of irony and feeling in the English language&apos. A first edition, later impression, identified as between the fourth and seventh impression, with catch word 'nant' to page 49.The final work, with ESTC reference no. N31959 is the very scare 1792 'Biographical Sketches of Some of the Leading Men at Present at the Head of Affairs in France&apos.
