Melancholy; As It Proceeds from the Disposition and Habit, the Passion of Love, and the Influence of Religion. Drawn Chiefly from the Celebrated Work Intitled Burton&Apos;S Anatomy of Melancholy; and in Which the Kinds, Causes, Consequences and Cures of This English Malady "- Are Traced from Within "Its Inmost Centre to Its Outmost Skin.
London, Vernor and Hood, 1801. Leather. A revised version of Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, bound in full tree calf. In a full tree calf binding. Frontispiece engraving depicting melancholy. Tailpieces to each chapter. Robert Burton (157701640) was an English author who wrote the encyclopedic tome The Anatomy of Melancholy and was also a lifelong sufferer of depression. For Burton, "melancholy" describes a range of mental illness from obsession, to delusion, to what we would now call clinical depression. Burton suggests a variety of remedies for melancholy, but warns they are all ultimately useless, in characteristic self-contradiction. The Anatomy of Melancholy was republished five times over seventeen years with massive alterations and expansions. This volume is one of the later revised editions and explores the causes, consequences and cures of melancholy, particularly melancholy stemming from love and religion. In a full tree calf binding. Externally smart, with a little rubbing to the spine and extremities. The front hinge is splitting but still firm. Internally, firmly bound. Front free end paper is coming loose. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot and handling mark throughout and more spotting to the first and last few pages. Very Good . Ill.: Thurston Delin. Very Good .

 Lewis Carroll, Feeding the Mind
Lewis Carroll
Feeding the Mind
London, Chatto & Windus, 1907. Cloth. A first edition of a delightful psychological musing by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland&apos. The first edition of the work. With an introduction by English hymn writer and clergyman, William H. Draper. The work was simultaneously published in quarter cloth for 1s. and morocco for 2s. This fascinating lecture by Carroll (Charles Dodgson) is a rare example of the famously timid author's public speaking and was delivered to a clergy in Derbyshire in 1884. Upon completion of the speech, Dodgson handed the script (in his famous purple ink) to Draper, who, several years later, went on to have the work published. After the lecture was finished, it was during Charles Dodgson's stay in this vicarage when he was publicly outed as Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The fascinating lecture highlights the importance of constant mental stimulation, drawing the analogy between correctly feeding the body, to correctly 'feeding' the mind with information and knowledge. In a quarter cloth binding. Externally generally smart; edges are a little discoloured, and there is a mark to the spine. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .

Francois Leuret, Fragmens Psychologiques Sur la Folie
Francois Leuret
Fragmens Psychologiques Sur la Folie
Paris, Crochard, Librarie Editeur, 1834. First edition. Paperback. Psychological Fragments Of Madness. First edition Includes information on hallucinations, visions and the terror of damnation. Psychological Fragments Of Madness. First edition Includes information on hallucinations, visions and the terror of damnation. Leuret was an important figure in the early days of French psychiatry. He stressed the importance of using a rational and humane approach in treatment of the mentally ill, and also believed that the criminally insane were sick individuals who were incapable of controlling their behavior. He felt that the origins of mental illness were unknown, and that it was wrong to define madness from only a somatic standpoint. Leuret's psychiatric theories put him at odds with other French physicians, particularly those who thought that the source of mental illness could be localized to a specific part of the brain's anatomy. In paper wraps. Externally, chipping to paper wraps, small close tears and fading. Internally, generally firmly bound with marks to the odd page, bright and clean. There are labels to the endpapers.
