, The Excellent Woman As Described in the Book of Proverbs
The Excellent Woman As Described in the Book of Proverbs
London, Religious Tract Society, c1850. Leather. - Anne Pratt was one of the Victorian age's most prominent botanical illustrators, publishing many books relating to her work during her lifetime. Arguably the most successful of these was 'The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain and Their Allies the Club Mosses, Pepperworts, and Horsetails', which was a six-volume work published over ten years. Though she's never received academic acclaim due to her being a self-taught woman, her work has inspired many towards a love for botany. Pratt only published two books during her life that weren't related to botany and nature, 'The Excellent Woman as Described in Proverbs', and 'Our Native Songsters&apos. With a frontispiece, illustrated title page, and a further twenty-three plates. In the original full morocco binding with gilt decorations to the boards and spine. Externally, sound. Rubbing has caused slight loss to the spine and to the extremities. Marking has caused some minor discolouration to the rear board, with a very small mark to the front board. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Evidence of lacking the front endpaper. Minor mark to the rear pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright with just a touch of age-toning to the egdes of pages, and are generally bright, with the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Plate between pages 20 and 21 is loose but present. Plate between pages 86 and 87 is lifting but remains firm. Plate between pages 94 and 95 is loose but present. Offsetting to some pages due to plates. Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Good .

A Letter of Thanks to Mr Benjamin Bennet for His Moderate Rebuke of an Insolent Pamphlet, Entitled, Presbyterian Prejudice Display&Apos;D. In Which the Great Candour, and Distinguish&Apos;D Moderation of the Worthy Presbyterian Teacher, Are Set Forth, and His Polite Language, and Flowers of Rhetorick, Put in One View, for the Diversion and Satisfaction of the Reader.
London, Thomas Osborne, 1723. First edition. Brochure/Pamphlet. This letter traces clashes between Zachary Grey and Benjamin Bennet over the latter's narrative of the Reformation. In this letter, an anonymous writer thanks the English Presbyterian minister Benjamin Bennet for his rebuke of Zachary Grey's work Presbyterian Prejudice Display'd. Building on a sermon preached on George I's coronation, Bennet published A Memorial of the Reformation in 1717. The work provided a Protestant view of the Reformation, and preserved anecdotes from original sources that had not been found elsewhere, such as of Judge Jeffreys's visit to Newcastle in 1683. Zachery Grey, an English priest, controversialist, and conservative spokesman for the Church of England then attempted to smear Bennet's narrative with his work Presbyterian Prejudice Display'd, in which he attempts to clear up 'mistaken historical facts' and re-establish 'the characters of several worthy members of the Church of England&apos. Unbound, with the majority of the calf remaining the spine. Externally, generally smart. The outer pages are a little age-toned, with a small tear at the front joint near the tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and very lightly foxed. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .

John Flavell
Divine Conduct, or, the Mysterie of Providence
London, R. White, c1678. Leather. An extremely scarce, first edition of John Flavel's Divine Conduct. Bound in quarter leather. The title page is missing. Nonetheless, a very important early nonconformist text. Not seen at auction for the last 30 years. Date, Title and Publisher's information taken from the pagination match on the ESTC. John Flavel, 1627 – 1691, was an English Presbyterian clergyman. Flavel was born at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire and studied at Oxford. A Presbyterian, Flavel was first a minister of Diptford in Devon, and then for the majority of his life, of Dartmouth. The Five Mile Act of 1665 forced Flavel to Slapton, however, he continued to journey to and preach at Dartmouth secretly. After the Declaration of Indulgence 1687, Flavel returned to Dartmouth as a licensed Congregationalist minister and resumed public preaching. Flavel was a prolific and popular author, as he "sought to circumvent renewed persecution of nonconformists by continuing his ministry in print. Over the next ten years he published A Token for Mourners (1674), The Seaman's Companion (1676), Divine Conduct (1678), Sea Deliverances (c.1679), The Touchstone of Sincerity (1679), The Method of Grace (1681), Navigation Spiritualized (1682), A Saint Indeed (1684), and Treatise on the Soul of Man (1685). There is evidence of some minor past worming to the top left-hand corner of pages from the front, through to approximately page 100. Good Only . Ill.: None. Good Only .
