This work comprises a collection of ballads and broadsides printed between 1559 and 1597 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.Containing the bookplate of Norman and Janey Buchan. Janey (1926-2021) was a Scottish Labour Member of the European Parliament for fifteen years; she was an important Glaswegian figure. Norman (1922-1990) was a Labour party politician representing West Renfrewshire between 1964 and 1983 and the Paisley South from 1983 until his death. He penned a work called '101 Scottish Songs' based on his interest in folk music. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. In the first two volumes, Georg Ludwig von Bar (1701-1767) anonymously wrote letters in the form of poetry, in praise of the printer Pierre Marteau (also known as Peter Hammer); the character Sancho Pança from the novel Don Quixote; characters from Molière's plays; and many others. The third volume contains poems by him with subject matters of a broader nature, including 'L'Homme sans Religion', 'Sur l'Histoire Litteraire', 'Sur l'Amour', among others. The third volume of this set is a very scarce work, making this set an unusual find. Unbound but intact.
