A detailed collection of some of the most important poetry from the greatest of French poets of the nineteenth century. Containing works from writers such as: Reynaud, Daudet, Verlaine, Mallarme, Lamartine, Hugo, Baudelaire, and Rimbaud, amongst others. With volume two containing works from 1818 to 1841, volume three containing works from 1842 to 1851, and volume four containing works from 1852 to 1866. Bound in half crushed morocco with marbled boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Vanishingly scarce. Disbound. 'Arms and the Man' is a long, satirical poem surrounding events at the Jacobite Rebellion, an uprising attempted by Charles Edward Stuart to regain the British throne, taking place in 1745. As noted by David Foxon, this satirical piece was written with the aim to make fun of both sides of this rebellion, with light mocking directed at Oglethorpe, Prince Charles, Wade and other prominent figures involved. Foxon A292. Disbound, as issued. Externally, sound, with light chipping to wrap extremities. Wraps are lightly soiled, with a few spots and marks. Joints are torn, with the title page and final page holding just to the head of the front joints. Internally, tender, with front and rear pages almost disbound. The classic fable is a parody of courtly love stories and chansons de geste. A faithful facsimile of a 1550 London edition, from a copy held at the Bodleian.Bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. This work comprises a collection of ballads and broadsides printed between 1559 and 1597 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.Containing the bookplate of Norman and Janey Buchan. Janey (1926-2021) was a Scottish Labour Member of the European Parliament for fifteen years; she was an important Glaswegian figure. Norman (1922-1990) was a Labour party politician representing West Renfrewshire between 1964 and 1983 and the Paisley South from 1983 until his death. He penned a work called '101 Scottish Songs' based on his interest in folk music. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. A pleasing copy of this narrative poem from Alfred Tennyson, who was the Poet Laureate during much of Queen Victoria's reign. Handsomely bound in full morocco, with decorative gilt and dentelles.'In Memorian' is an elegy by Alfred, Lord Tennyson for his Cambridge friend Arthur Henry Hallam, who tragically died at 22 years old from a cerebral haemorrhage in 1833.
