'Modern Boy' was a boy's magazine that ran from 1928 until the start of the Second World War in 1939; it comprised 610 issues in that time. Twenty two annuals were also released by Modern Boy, including yearly annuals as well as annuals focusing on transport means such as this. The most famous stories from the Modern Boy magazines were the works of W. E. Johns, featuring Biggles, a pilot and adventurer.This first edition is profusely illustrated throughout with vignette illustrations and photographs. In a quarter cloth binding without a dust wrapper. The Thousand Mile Trial started in London in April 1900 and followed a route that included Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds and Nottingham before returning to the capital in May. At various locations along the route the entrants and their machines were tested in speed trials and a number of hill-climbs. For many ordinary people, it would be their first encounter with the motor car. This book tells the story of the conception and execution of a bold plan which was the foundation stone for the British Motor Industry. Using reports and photographs of the day, this work examines the effects those motoring pioneers have achieved. Includes chapters on: building the track, early records, the first British Grand Prix, Brooklands as an aerodrome, looping the loop, the First World War, new techniques, and the jet age. Brooklands was a 2.767 mile motor racing circuit and aerodrome built near Weybridge in Surrey, England. It opened in 1907 and was the world's first purpose-built 'banked' motor racing circuit as well as one of Britain's first airfields. It became Britain's largest aircraft manufacturing centre by 1918, producing military aircraft such as the Wellington and civil airliners like the Viscount. The circuit hosted its last race in August 1939 and today part of it forms the Brooklands Museum, a major aviation and motoring museum, as well as a venue for vintage car, motorcycle and other transport-related events. With contributions from William Boddy, a British journalist and editor of Motor Sport magazine from 1936-1991, "L'Ancien", Edwin Colston Shepherd, and Charles Gardner, an English industrialist specialising in mechanical aircraft. Known colloquially as 'The Blue 'un', this magazine is profusely illustrated with examples of motorcycles. Including an issue regarding the breaking of the land speed record. With details on triumph spring wheel, images of the Bicycle and Motorcycle show in Earls Court to volume V, and innovative cycles such as third wheel caravans.  There is one important article in the 1953 issue which shows racer Vic Willoughby on Pendine Beach, where he broke the land speed record. Known as 'The Blue 'un' to distinguish it from its rival publication 'Motor Cycling&apos. August 29th 1946 issue has the first leaf with the editor cited as Arthur B Bourne.
