Chronica de Mailros E Codice Unico
Edinburgh, Typis Societatis Edinburgensis, 1835. Leather. A leather bound copy of the medieval chronical. With three facsimiles from the Cottonian manuscript. An uncommon copy of the Chronicle of Melrose, with three facsimiles from the Cottonian Manuscript, Faustina B. ix, collated and complete. Published in Latin, with an introduction in English. Believed to have been written by monks at Melrose Abbey, the two part chronical spans 735 to 1270. The first part of the chronicle is a compilation from the Anglo-Saxon Chronical along with other historical works written by Simeon of Durham and Hoveden. The second section starts from 1140, and contains original work illustrative of the early history of Scotland. In 2014, it was discovered that the Chronicle contains the oldest intendent account of the sealing of the magna carta. The Cotton or Cottonian library is a collection of manuscripts once owned by the seventeenth antiquarian and bibliophile Sir Robert Bruce Cotton. Cotton's collection was one of the 'foundation collections' of the British Museum, and now comprises a large section in the Department of Manuscripts in the British Library. The chronicle is currently in the British Library. Presented to the Bannatyne Club by John Hay and Alexander Pringle, with a list of the club to the front of the volume. The Bannatyne club was a text publication society founded by Sir Walter Scott to print rare works of Scottish interest across various genres. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. From the library of Mr Blackwood Greenshields. With an institutional bookplate to the front pastedown from The Institute of Accountants and Actuaries in Glasgow. Some of the ink from this bookplate has caused some offsetting to the adjacent page. In a quarter calf binding over dark orange paper boards. Externally, generally smart. There are a couple of marks to the boards, with some scuffing of the leather to the front extremities. Lightly rubbed to the spine, a little more so to the joints and the head and tail of the spine. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from the odd spot towards the front of the volume, pages are bright and clean. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
