There are also detailed notes on the use of glasshouses and hothouses in the garden. Volume one is illustrated with a total of thirty-three plates to the rear of the text: fifteen monochromatic plates, two of which are in colour, and eighteen folding plates, two of which are also in colour. Though plate twenty-two is listed in the contents, it was never published and an explanation as to why is included in-text. Collated complete. Volume two is illustrated with many in-text illustrations. Written by Charles M'Intosh, an English plant biologist and writer who established some of the British principles of gardening. From the library of Doctor Malcolm Higgs, an important architectural historian who worked as an assistant architect to Stirling & Gowan, working on their particularly renowned Leicester University Engineering Laboratory. During his long career he taught at the University of Edinburgh School of Architecture, Canterbury School of Architecture, and University of Nottingham. Later in his life he was the Vice-President and Honorary Librarian of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and contributed and edited the "Journal of Architecture".
