A very scarce copy of this report on the Glover-West system of continuous carbonization in vertical retorts, dated from the titles to the front board of this volume, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with logo in gilt to the front board. Issued by the West's Gas Improvement Company. The system was introduced by John West in collaboration in Samuel Glove. Some successful experiments in 1917 on the simultaneous generation of water-gas produced large development in the gas industry. This volume outlines the development of the work done during and since the war, with photographs and plans in black and white illustrating the various instalments and expansion of the retorts. In the original publisher's full cloth binding, with titles in gilt to the spine. Externally generally sound with some shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Library labels to the front board, with stamps to the front pastedown, title page. Internally, the binding is slightly tender. The first edition of this fascinating look at the early history of flight, focussing on the phenomena of ballooning, written by the pioneer aeronaut John M. Bacon. Illustrated throughout. The first edition of this work. This work is an octavo. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and three plates. Collated, complete. This work is a fascinating history of aviation, looking at the early years of attempts to build a manned flying machine. Bacon here focussing on the fascination with ballooning, an early form of flying, that had, when this was published, only been around successfully for about one-hundred and fifty years. The author describes his own experiences with ballooning, discussing his first ascent and subsequent adventures. He had been interested in aeronautics since his boyhood, and his first ascent in a balloon took place from Crystal Palace on the 20th August 1888. Whilst on these ascents, Bacon also did meteorological researching. In 1888, Bacon became a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He underwent his ballooning and meteorological experiments with the help of his daughter, Gertrude, who paved the way for women in the aeronautical field. The first edition of this report from the Ministry of Public works, Egypt, regarding water flow irrigation channels in the Sadd el Kafara region of Egypt. A scarce work, from the early 20th century. Signed by the author to the recto of front endpaper, 'F Newhouse with the Authors Compliments, A D Butcher&apos. Prior owner F Newhouse's inscription to the front pastedown and his neat notes throughout to the margins. From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan. Illustrated, with twenty two plates, being graphs and diagrams to support A D Butcher's findings including a folding map of the Bahr el Gebel system. This work discusses the general hydraulics of the Sadd region as well as a detailed investigation into the part of the Sadd through which the Bahr el Gebel and its many subsidiary channels flow. The enquiry which lead to this work had been a result of years of work to eventually allow for a systematic and orderly flow from Mongalla to Lake No. The oldest known dam of real significance is the Sadd-el-Kafara dam in Egypt. It was constructed around 2600BC. To this work, Butcher outlines the history of hydraulics in the region and the work that he and Drs H E Hurst, P Phillips and E S Waller, among many others, have undertaken. This title was published as a part of a series of reports commissioned by the 'Ministry of Public Works, Egypt&apos. The Egyptian Department of Public works was established in the early 19th century and concentrated on works relating to irrigation and hydraulic engineering. It became the most respected engineering entity and regarded as a fantastic school for civil engineers in modern Egypt. This work was issued during the British Occupation Period. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd marks to boards.
