In the publisher's original cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper.Written by two authorities on the subject, Mary Clarke and Clement Crisp. Mary Clarke is a ballet critic for the 'Guardian' and editor of the 'Dancing Times&apos. She was also the London editor of the New York Dance News. Clement Crisp was a critic for the Financial Times as well as the librarian and archivist of the Royal Academy of Dancing. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, 'For Joan in Gratitude for all your Hard Work, George Xmas 1980.' Superbly illustrated with almost 300 designs, 35 of which are in colour. With chapters on Renaissance Spectacle, Rococo, Neoclassical and Romantic Staging, Modern Ballet, French Style Ballet, Russian Design. A beautiful explorative work on this important aspect of ballet performance. This work looks at the interesting history of dance in Europe. The author looks at the development of dance, looking at folk dance, social dancing, ballet, and more. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, three colour plates, seventy-two monochrome plates, and numerous in-text engravings. Written by Cecil Sharp and Paul Oppe. Cecil Sharp was the leader of the twentieth century folk-song revival in England, writing the influential work 'English Folk Song: Some Conclusions&apos. He also revived the tradition of country dance, as well as promoting Morris dancing, and founding the English Folk Dance Society. Oppe was an art historian and art collector, who was the Deputy Director of the Victoria & Albert Museum, and a Fellow of the British Academy. Collated, complete. A very scarce work, in a fantastic condition.Signed, by two noted German ballet dancers who have profiles written about them in this volume. The first, Marianne Krusse, performed in the Hamburg Ballet's premiere 'Romeo and Juliet' which she performed originally for the Frankfurt Ballet in this very year. She performed alongside Max Midinet, whose signature is also present to this work. Loosely inserted is a photograph of the choreographer for Romeo and Juliet, John Neumeier. This is signed by Marianne with a note to the prior owner of this work, Joan Hewson. Marianne may have been a student of Joan's. From the library of Joan Hewson, the Renowned Cecchetti School of Dance Instructor. Joan left a legacy of numerous successful professional dancers from across the world.
