Seven folding maps from 'Bartholomew's New Reduced Survey' series.In the original slipcase, in a good condition. This includes: Sheet 9, Sheffield; Sheet 12, Cheshire; Sheet 13, Derby & Notts; Sheet 17, Shropshire; Sheet 18, Birmingham District; Sheet 23, Hereford; and Sheet 24, Oxfordshire. Each map is colourful, detailed, and cloth-backed, with a scale of two miles to an inch, for the use of tourists and cyclists. John Bartholomew & Co published a total of sixty-six maps for England, Wales, and Scotland.John George Bartholomew was the Cartographer to the King. He was an eminent cartographer, and is best known for arguably having named the continent of Antarctica. He passed the company down to his son, John Ian Bartholomew, who introduced new cartographic techniques. Each map measures at 21.5" by 30" unfolded. In the original publisher's paper wraps, in the original cloth two-part slipcase. Externally, smart, with light edge wear and handling marks. A very scarce pamphlet promoting and detailing the hot mineral springs of Bath, including a price list of for the costs of public and private baths, and for drinking the waters. The hot springs were used for public bathing during the Roman rule of Britain, before being brought back into much popularity from the sixteenth century. In particular it was an important part of society culture during the Georgian eras, during the height of popularity in the city.This was published by the lessees of the bath, Green & Simms, in July 1842. A charming scrapbook comprising of a plethora of plates and illustrations depicting Brighton, all taken from other works.The plates also show various fashions of Brighton, the prominent people known to frequent the city, and interior views of important places, such as the Pavilion. Including plates of the baths, St. Ann's Well and wild garden at Furze Hill, St. Nicholas Old Parish Church, Hospital for Sick Children, Town Hall at Bartholomews, Ship Hotel, the sea front, Bedford Square, Brunswick Square, the pier, Brighton College, many views of the Pavilion, and some satirical clippings, including one of a man dancing with a seal.Thirteen of the plates are coloured.Including two maps of Brighton and Sussex.Undated, dated from the latest date given in the text. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, rubbed. A little loss to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, and of paper to the boards.
