Bound in an attractive leather binding, the boards gold-stamped with an oval-shaped central ornament. (12) (178) (1), (5) (30) (1), (1) (54), (9) folia. 18th century Vellum, 8° The second, much-revised, and extended edition of this rare and early Dutch Psalter by Philips of Marnix, Lord of Saint-Aldegonde, 1540-1598. The first edition of this work was published in 1580 at Antwerp only containing the rhymed Psalms of which the first verse was set to music. This second edition also contains Van Marnix's Bible translation printed in the margins next to the rhymed Psalms. His translation was an entirely new one which he translated from the original Hebrew. Van Marnix was the first Dutch translator who wrote the name of God in full in his translation of the Bible, in the 18th verse of Psalm 83 he uses 'Jehovah' for the name of God in both the rhymed version and the Bible translation. However, although his new version of the Psalms was closer to the source and valued by many as better than the Psalms by Dathenus which were in use at that time, it was never introduced in the churches. Due to this the number of printed copies was not large and besides the Psalms, the work contains Van Marnix's Hymns, the Heidelberg Catechism, and several other forms of which the Consolation of the Sick (Ziekentroost) has its title page. (Some pages are stained, mostly in the margins. The title page, the first seven pages of the prelim, and the last page of Den Siecken Troost are added as neat copies on old paper. The best-known work of Italian physician and philologist Girolamo Mercuriale (1530-1606). First published in 1569 it was the first complete text on the subject of exercise in relation to health and medicine, being referred to as the first sports textbook. In this work, he examines in extensive detail the principles and rules of exercise. It is also a history of the attitudes and practices of the Greeks and Romans in regard to diet, hygiene, bathing, and exercise, and their effects on health and disease. Mercuriale quotes more than 120 works from Greek and Roman authors. He was 'particularly interested in how specific exercises affected specific diseases and was one of the first therapists to suggest that exercise can be helpful or harmful depending on its use, duration, and intensity. On the basis of research, he recommends or prohibits physical activities, describes them in detail, suggests proper equipment, and outlines training schedules and techniques. Illustrated with 22 woodcut illustrations and 1 folding plan, depicting various sports such as boxing, swimming, and discus throw. The work is bound in a richly blind-stamped binding featuring on the front cover the coat of arms of the city Strassbourg (Germany) and on the back cover a portrait of Christoph, Duke of Württemberg. It's the most extensive edition of the great Polyglot Bible, the London Polyglot, or the Walton Polyglot after the compilator Brian Walton, 1600-1661. According to Brunet, this edition is the most sought after, being more complete and correct than the others, and containing nine different languages, with Ethiopian and Persian added to the seven languages of the Paris Polyglot. So it includes the text of the Bible in 9 different languages, Hebrew, Samaritan, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Ethiopic, Syriac, Arabic, and Persian. All of the texts which are not in Latin are accompanied by Latin translations and all are arranged side by side or one over another on the two pages open before the reader. The first three volumes contain the Old Testament. They give the Hebrew text with the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Latin Vulgate, the Greek Septuagint, the Aramaic Targum, and the Syriac and Arabic paraphrases. The fourth part contains the Apocrypha and the Triplex Targum, i.e. Targumim I and II of Jerusalem and the Persian version of Jacob ben Joseph Tawus. The fifth volume is devoted to the New Testament, printed in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Arabic, and Ethiopian. Finally, the last section contains the critical apparatus. Prentbijbel van Ysbrand van Hamelsveld welke bestaat uit een titelpagina, register en 126 foliobladen met op elk 2 gravures. De prenten zijn gegraveerd door Jacob Folkema, Pieter Tanje? en Simon Fokke. In het jaar 1791 werd de prentbijbel uitgegeven met bijgevoegde beschrijvingen door Van Hamelsveld. De prentbijbel wordt vaak naar hem genoemd ook al werkte hij niet mee aan deze eerste uitgave. Contemporary red morocco Leather with 6 raised bands, Folio H. 44 x B. 28,5 x W. 3 cm. The printbible by Ysbrand van Hamelsveld which contains a titlepage, index and 126 folio sized leaves with 2 engravings on each. The prints are engraved by Jacob Folkema, Pieter Tanje? and Simon Fokke. In the year 1791 the printbible was published with accompanying descriptions by Van Hamelsveld.
