(LIGHTMAN, HERB A., ED.)
American Cinematographer (October 1967) [Cover Story: "Photographing 'the St. Valentine's Day Massacre'"; Also Includes "Star Trek" Article]
Hollywood: ASC Agency Inc, 1967. (Vol. 48, No. 10). Magazine. [very nice copy, minimal wear, light age-toning at page edges; no subscription label or other markings]. (B&W photographs, ads) Monthly magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, a very technically-oriented publication with plenty of information (articles and advertisements) related to the latest equipment, technical processes and production techniques then in use in the Hollywood motion picture industry. The cover story and primary article is a 4-page piece, illustrated with numerous photographs, about the filming of THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, directed by Roger Corman and photographed by Milton Krasner -- which was, as the article details, shot not at all in its Chicago settings but entirely on sound stages and street sets at 20th Century-Fox and M-G-M. Perhaps of greater interest in retrospect, however, is the other behind-the-scenes production article, entitled "Out-of-this-world Special Effects for 'Star Trek'," in which their companies' individual contributions to the show are discussed by three of the top special-effects experts in the business -- Howard A. Anderson, Linwood G. Dunn, and Joseph Westheimer -- who "worked separately but in a spirit of cordial collaboration to produce some of the most stunning and literally 'far out' visual effects ever to be recorded on color film.". American Horror Story: Freak Show
[Los Angeles]: FX, [2008]. First Edition. Hardcover. (in Near Fine slipcase) [book itself is unworn, but slightly blemished on rear endpapers from removal of spot of sticky substance; slipcase shows some external surface-rubbing]. (color photographs and graphics) Large-format (approx. 9"x13") promotional book (in slipcase), issued in advance of the premiere of the fourth season of the FX series "American Horror Story," a self-contained 13-episode mini-series set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1952, and telling the story of the struggle fo survival of one of the last remaining freak shows in America. Several pages are devoted to each of the show's major characters, including a full-page color photo of each actor in costume, and a publicity-kit-type biography of the actor; among the cast were Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Michael Chiklis, and Angela Bassett. Also profiled (more briefly) are the members of the show's creative team and various FX network executives. Per Wikipedia, "Freak Show" was FX's most-watched program ever, and received a total of twenty Emmy nominations, including six for various cast members. As essentially a press kit (albeit a well-produced one), this was never offered for sale to the public. NOTE that the scanned image accompanying this listing is of the book itself, not the slipcase.. (GAVIN, ARTHUR E., ED.)
American Cinematographer (December 1953) [Cover: White Christmas]
Hollywood: A.S.C. Agency, Inc, 1953. (Vol. 34, No. 12). Magazine. [some dampstaining along the spine (mostly visible on rear cover), bleed-through to a few interior pages]. (B&W photographs, ads) Monthly magazine of the American Society of Cinematographers, a very technically-oriented publication with plenty of information (articles and advertisements) related to the latest equipment, technical processes and production techniques then in use in the Hollywood motion picture industry. Although the film WHITE CHRISTMAS is featured on the cover (with a nice shot of Danny Kaye, Bing Crosby, director Michael Curtiz and cinematographer Loyal Griggs), the tie-in article isn't really about the film itself, but rather about Paramount's "new 'Lazy-8' double-frame wide-screen camera," WHITE CHRISTMAS just happening to be the first film to employ it. Of somewhat more interest is an article about a survey conducted by the magazine's editors on the question "Is 3-D Dead...?"; connected with that is Part 2 of an article by Julian Gunzburg, M.D, called "The Story of Natural Vision." Dr. Gunzburg was a prominent ophthalmologist who along with his brother, screenwrier/producer Milton Gunzburg, owned the rights to the Natural Vision 3-D process, which was used to shoot the film that more or less kicked off the 3-D craze in the early 1950s, BWANA DEVIL.. (NO AUTHOR)
'Bama and the Bear [*Signed* (But Not Really)]
Salt Lake City: Great American Sports, Inc, (c.1983). Signature Edition. Hardcover. (leather-bound; no dust jacket, as issued) [a bit of wear to spine extremities and corners of front cover, tiny scrape mark on front cover, faint staining near bottom of rear cover]. (B&W and color photographs) A hagiographic chronicle of the life and career of Paul "Bear" Bryant, the legendary coach who guided the University of Alabama football team for 25 years, garnering six national championships along the way. He retired at the end of the 1982 season and died four weeks later -- which screwed up the plans for this "Signature Edition" of the book, originally conceived as a limited/numbered edition, each copy to be personally signed by Bryant. As explained on the limitation page, "his sudden and unexpected death has now precluded a personal autograph," although the page still bears his "Authorized [but printed] Signature," attested to (with official seal) by a Notary Public (which if you think about it is pretty weird: what exactly is being "authorized" here?). Anyway, it's pretty much everything you'd want to know about Crimson Tide football from 1958 through 1982, and also about Bryant's earlier coaching gigs at Vanderbilt University, the University of Kentucky, and Texas A&M. And the book is "An Officially Licensed Product of the University of Alabama," so there. (This is copy no. 0037 of an unspecified number of copies.) And more: in a paper sleeve on the rear pastedown is a 45 rpm record containing a Bryant interview, some post-game commentary, and a statement of his "philosophy and creed.". Very Good+ .

The Book of the Bench; with Thirty-Nine Reproductions in Colour from Paintings by "Spy" and Other Cartoonists
London: James Mackenzie Limited, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. (embossed royal blue cloth; no dust jacket) [front hinge cracked but holding, otherwise a good sound copy; moderate wear to cloth at extremities, one-inch tear in cloth at top rear hinge, another tiny tear in cloth at top of spine; internally quite clean, with all plates present and in excellent condition]. (tipped-on color plates) An illustrated directory of prominent British judges and lawyers of the time, with each color plate accompanied by a one- or two-page biography. It starts at the top, with The Right Honourable Lord High Chancellor and The Right Honourable Lord Chief Justice of England, and proceeds through seventeen additional Right Honourables, fifteen mere Honourables, and an assortment of other characters such as The Recorder of London and His Honour Judge Francis Bacon -- and even a couple of guys who are apparently not Honourable at all. By these accounts, however, they were all a bunch of fine, upstanding fellows. A sample comment: "He is a quiet, kindly, considerate gentleman, wholly free from conceit, in whose keeping the wholesome traditions of the English Bench for good sense in civil matters and for humanity in criminal are quite safe." ("Humanity in criminal"? Perhaps a Freudian typo?) ***NOTE: Additional shipping charges for this heavy book may apply for non-U.S. customers, or for Priority Mail shipping within the U.S.; if this causes you concern, please inquire before placing your order.***. (CALLOWAY, CAB)
Cab Calloway's Jive Jubilee of Songs; Includes Cab Calloway's Original Jive Dictionary
New York: Mills Music, Inc, (c.1942). Unstated edition. Stapled wraps. [Good only, complete but in somewhat rough shape, with quite a bit of creasing and edgewear to the covers, spine roll, light pencil annotation here and there (including in the "Jive Dictionary" on the inside rear cover]. (2 full-page halftone photos in center spread) A collection of music and lyrics for 18 of Calloway's hit songs, including most of the tunes with which his name is usually associated: "Minnie the Moocher," "St. James Infirmary," "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal, You," "The Scat Song," etc. "Cab Calloway's Jive Dictionary," which was also published in a small pocket-size booklet, is here presented entirely on the inside rear cover of this 9x12-inch format publication, with a somewhat different selection of terms and definitions than in some of the smaller-format printings I've seen. (There are about 150 entries here, compared with about 200 in the other versions.) Sample entries in this compendium of etymological sublimity include: "GOT YOUR BOOTS ON -- you know what it is all about, you are wise"; "LAY YOUR RACKET -- To jive, to sell an idea"; "NEIGHO POPS" -- Nothing doing, pal"; "OFF TIME JIVE -- A sorry excuse, saying the wrong thing." New York: SunCraft International Inc, 1975. (Vol. 8, No. 6). Magazine. [nice clean copy, with minor wear at the bottom corners, slight wrinkling at left edge of rear cover]. (B&W photographs, ads) This issue's features are: an account of filming the documentary HARVEST in Ethiopia, by the filmmaker Elliot Davis; an interview with director Peter Davis about the making of his Vietnam War documentary HEARTS AND MINDS (which would go on to win the Oscar as the year's best documentary feature); two articles on the production of the TV special "Juice on the Loose," about O.J. Simpson (one of which, by co-producer Richard Rubinstein, goes into great detail about the process of selling the independently-produced program to network TV); and an interview with director Jilll Godmilow about the making of her documentary film ANTONIA: A PORTRAIT OF THE WOMAN, a profile of America's first woman orchestra conductor, Dr. Antonia Brico. Also: a one-page profile of American International Pictures, with extensive quotations from its chairman and president Samuel Z. Arkoff; a "Filmmakers Notebook" feature about the use of widescreen systems; and a lengthy report on that year's Tehran International Film Festival, by Betty Jeffries Demby. John M. Stahl [Bilingual Spanish/English Edition]
San SebastiŠn/Madrid: Festival Internacional de Cine de San SebastiŠn / Filmoteca EspaŮola, 1999. First Edition. Softcover. [very slight bumping to lower extremities, about a 1/2" crack in top of spine (integrity of binding unaffected), no other significant wear]. (B&W photographs) Extensive survey of the career of Hollywood director John M. Stahl, best known for what were once called "women's pictures" (such as BACK STREET, IMITATION OF LIFE, MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, etc.), but who turned out at least one bona fide, undeniable masterpiece, the delirious 1945 Technicolor melodrama LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. Issued in conjunction with a retrospective of the director's work at the 1999 San Sebastian International Film Festival, the book presents nearly two dozen articles, essays and critiques; contributors include Andrew Sarris, Joe Adamson, Jean-Loup Bouget, Bertrand Tavernier, Marshall Deutelbaum, and Miguel Marias. Also included are a complete "critical filmography" and a bibliography. All text is presented in both Spanish and English. As far as I'm aware this is the most extensive analysis of Stahl's ouevre ever published. ***NOTE: Additional shipping charges for this heavy book will apply for non-U.S. customers; please inquire before placing your order.***. (ROAN, CARY M., ED.)
Laser Marquee (October-November 1994 Issue) [Cover: Bing Crosby]
(Vol. 1, No. 2). Magazine. [minor creasing along right edge of front cover, no other significant wear]. (B&W photographs, ads) The second (and possibly final) issue of this short-lived periodical, pitched as "the collectors' guide to classic movies on laserdisc" -- although "ill-timed" might be a better descriptor than "short-lived," since by 1994 the handwriting was already on the wall for the laserdisc: the DVD format was introduced the following year. About half of this magazine's 24 pages (including covers) is devoted to lists of recent releases, with the only really substantive content being a 5-page interview with Bing Crosby, conducted by Mel Neuhaus in 1976 and apparently published here for the first time. (Or at least no information is given here about any prior publication.) Also covered (with brief reviews) are notices of recent laserdisc releases: four Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe-based films; three films directed by Edward D. Wood Jr.; seven films starring either Fred Astaire or Bing Crosby (or both), along with brief guides to the availability of each man's films on laserdisc; and LONELY IS THE BRAVE, starring Kirk Douglas. There is also an alphabetical index of Warner Bros. cartoons, indicating which laserdisc collection(s) each title can be found on.. Near Fine in Near Fine dj .

Murray the K's Christmas Revue - Program [1962]
(n.p.): (no publisher indicated), [1962]. First Edition. Stapled wraps. [light external wear, a few horizontal stress lines along spine, short diagonal bends/creases at top and bottom corners of front cover]. (B&W photographs) Original program (20 pages including covers) for one of the multi-racial rock 'n' roll shows staged and hosted several times a year by popular disc jockey Murray the "K" (Murray Kaufman) at various Brooklyn theatres (mostly the Brooklyn Fox) during the early to mid-1960s. This one was the Christmas edition for 1962 (presented on December 27), and the talent lineup was truly mind-blowing, including Jackie Wilson, The Four Seasons, The Shirells, Joey Dee, Little Eva, Dionne Warwick, Sam & Dave, and (as the saying goes) many more! (The "many more," of course, included quite a few one-hit wonders and/or short-lived groups or performers that have long since faded from the memories of all but the hardest-core fans: who remembers The Dovells, The Earls, The Cookies, or Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans?) This particular show also marked a significant stage in the development of another group with an enduring legacy: The Ronettes, who during 1962 were just coming into their own as a group (and who wouldn't hook up with Phil Spector until a few months into 1963). Murray clearly wanted to play them up, evidenced by the fact that he chose to be photographed with the girls (all at a bowling alley, pretending to bowl) in a full-page shot that appears early in the program; their photo also headlines the ad for Colpix Records that appears on the program's back cover. In fact, only Jackie Wilson, the show's headliner, gets more space in the program than the Ronettes (a full-page photo, plus a full page of biographical highlights, plus a full-page ad on the inside back cover exclusively promoting his albums).. (THE NEWSPAPER GUILD OF NEW YORK)
Page One of 1953: Yearbook of New York's Newspaper Men and Women
New York: Newspaper Guild of New York, 1953. "20th Anniversary". Hardcover. Illustrated by (cover) Fred L. Packer. (pictorial paper label on front cover; no dust jacket, as issued) [shelfwear and bumping to bottom edges, some fraying to cloth at top of spine, a few tiny stains adjacent to spine (on both front and rear covers)] (B&W photographs, cartoons, ads, etc.) Commemorative yearbook, issued to coincide with the "Page One Ball," an annual shindig at which the Big Apple's newspapermen (and probably a few women) gathered to make merry, give themselves awards, and generally congratulate one another for being, well, New York newspapermen, at a time when NYC boasted no fewer than seven daily papers. Numerous reporters and columnists contributed short pieces, many of a humorous nature, and quite a few having to do with the vicissitudes of the journalistic racket and/or aspects of New York life. The cover illustration is by Fred L. Packer, and among the cartoonists whose work appears in the book are Milton Caniff, Irving Hoffman, Bernard Seaman, Chic Young, and Virgil Partch (VIP). And of course there are the ads: product ads for cigarettes, airlines, restaurants, liquor, hotels, etc, and also numerous "tribute" ads, mostly from showbiz figures ("Best wishes from Sid Caesar," that sort of thing). This particular copy was personalized (via the gold-embossment of his name at the lower corner of the front cover) for film director Fred Zinnemann, and laid in is a presentation letter to him from Ted Nelson, Director of the Page One Ball; unfortunately, whoever did the cover-embossing omitted the final "n" from Zinnemann's name. The high spirits documented in this publication, unfortunately, didn't quite survive all the way to the end of 1953: on November 28, six of the city's seven daily papers went on strike (the photo engravers wanted a raise and better working conditions), and for eleven whole days readers had only the Herald Tribute available to them for their regular news fix. (NOTE that although the cover illustration references the "20th Anniversary," this would appear to be a reference to the Newspaper Guild of New York itself; I've found no evidence that this sort of commemorative "Page One" volume had been published prior to 1951. In any event, an OCLC search turns up less than a handful of library holdings of this publication.). Very Good .

(in original clear acetate dust jacket) [the book itself shows only minimal wear; the clear acetate dust jacket is lightly scuffed, with small tears (cracks) at the lower left corner of the front cover and the top left corner of the rear cover, and also missing a small (approx 1.5" x .75") chip at the bottom right corner of the front cover]. ALLEN, STEVE
The Funny Men [*Signed* Twice]
New York: Simon and Schuster, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated by (dj design) Peter Hollander. [tiny bump/crack at bottom front corner, a few ink lines in margins (others have been neatly erased); the jacket is a bit of a mess, having been torn in several places and tape-repaired/reinforced both externally and internally, also well-worn at the flap-folds]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author, twice: "To Jack / Best wishes!" on the colophon page, and "To Francis -- / Best regards -- " on the ffep; both signatures are with the author's full name. "Here for the first time is a survey of the [comedy] field from someone who is up to his larynx in it." And indeed he was: at the time this book first appeared, Allen was two years into his stint as the first host of "The Tonight Show" on NBC, and in writing about his contemporaries -- most of the top TV comics of the day -- he had the advantage of knowing most of them in person. After a couple of chapters in which he muses on the state of TV humor in general, he devotes a chapter of the book to each of the following (arranged alphabetically, no doubt a calculated choice to avoid the appearance of playing favorites): Fred Allen, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Red Buttons, Sid Caesar, Eddie Cantor, Wally Cox, Jackie Gleason, George Gobel, Arthur Godfrey, Bob Hope, Sam Levenson, Jerry Lewis, Groucho Marx, Phil Silvers, and Red Skelton. Signed by Author. Very Good+ in Fair dj .
