Sketches of Southwark, Old and New
London, William Wesley & Son. 1902, Second Edition, Enlarged. Hard Cover. Front hinge cracking, has been mended with tape, but still cracked in prelims; a few pages are loose here and there. Not quite sure if the prelims are as they should be, as there is no numbering. half-title, title page, plate with text on grant of arms to the borough, frontispiece portrait of author; foreword, preface to the second edition, two identical contents pages, then text starts on page 9. 594 nujmbered pages, then 2 unnumbered of supplemental index to second enlarged edition, then vii of index. There are numerous illustrations in the text, plus 23 plates and 10 folding plates that are not numbered. There is no list of illustrations. A few thumb marks, text block rather shaky, but text complete and basically clean. Dark green cloth with gilt titles, worn on edges. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Interesting history of the borough, with much personal reminiscence. Chapter on the beginning of the Cuming Museum. (Heavy - may require extra shipping to some locations). Good/No Jacket.
