WILLIAM J. THOMS F.S.A.
The Longevity of Man, its facts and its fictions
London, Frederic Norgate. 1879, First Edition. Hardcover. Book, Green cloth, gilt titles on spine. 320 pages. "With a prefatory letter to Prof. Owen, C.B. F.R.S. on the limits and frequency of exceptional cases" Author was Deputy Librarian, House of Lords, and alleged to have invented the term "folklore". Founder of Notes & Queries, in 1849. This book is an investigation of alleged centenarians, including examinations of the cases of Henry Jenkins, Old Parr, and the Countess of Desmond, and an appendix on the tombstone of Betty Evans in Pinner. There is a bookplate of Alexander Thoms, with coat of arms & motto Virtutis Praemium, and the half-title has the name John Thoms, Orpington, suggesting that this copy was for some time in the author's family. There is a little wear on the extremities, and a little foxing at either end, otherwise in very good condition. Very Good/No Jacket.
